All electric car drivers will pay £165-a-year in tax from April 2025 as Jeremy Hunt announced an end to tax exemptions for greener vehicles in his Autumn Budget
As part of plans to make the motoring tax system 'fairer', any electric vehicle (EV) registered after April 1, 2017 will be charged a standard Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) annual rate of £165.
Meanwhile the newest EVs registered from April 1, 2025 will pay the lowest 'first year rate of VED' which currently stands at just £10, but could go up by the time the tax comes into effect.
These vehicles will be subject to pay the £165-a-year standard rate from year two.
While up until now EVs have been exempt from the 'Expensive Car Supplement' - dubbed the 'Tesla tax' - for cars with a list price of over £40,000, this will also end in 2025.
From April 1, 2025 models exceeding £40,000 face an extra £355-a-year for five years on top of the standard £165 annual rate.
Forecast half of all new vehicles will be electric by 2025, to make our motoring tax system fairer I've decided that from then, electric vehicles will no longer be exempt from vehicle excise duty.'
Mr Hunt said company car tax rates will remain lower for electric vehicles than traditionally fuelled vehicles, but will increase by one percentage point for three years from 2025.

I don’t know about you but I keep my gasoline tank sealed from the atmosphere. I find that works well...and in fact, if the gas cap is loose my car does not like it and flashes a message.
But, but...that wasn’t the deal. You supply us endless electricity to charge our go carts and we skate for free.
Britons must be rich. It’s probably from not having to pay for health insurance.

That is nothing compared to what they will pay for electricity to charge them.
Not even close to the end of the gravy train. The cost of batteries will end electric cars in the short term.
I guess you’ve never heard of an “evaporative emission system”. Evaporative emissions in modern (post 1970) cars are captured in a charcoal canister and routed back through the engine during times of high manifold vacuum.

EVs are heavier..due to batteries. They due more damage to roads than fossil-fuel vehicles.
I thought the current UK Parliament and Prime Minister were ( ahem ) or are called “Conservatives”....
Electric vehicles are heavier and their owners should pay more for wear and tear on roads and bridges.
It was bound to happen sooner or later, & they will probably turn your car off remotely if your tax payment is delinquent.
Well occasionally we do get those hard to diagnose P0456 codes...

Gasoline eventually goes bad and fouls the engine. Best thing is to top off the tank as much as possible, otherwise moisture in the tank will foul the mix. Because of ethanol in the gasoline, the water content in ethanol will separate and contribute to fouling the tank. Another best practice is to constantly refresh the gasoline, don't let it sit for months. I have owned vintage cars, and have had to deal with tanks that went bad - gasoline turned to a gummy stinky mess after sitting for some years. Have had to boil out the mess by dipping in acid tanks. Use up your gas quickly and preserve your car.

My driving is limited, perhaps 100 miles/month. I suppose I should look for an additive of some sort?
A stabilizer helps, you can get it at any auto store. I add it to my yard gas motor tools, as well as to my cars I don’t drive often. The other thing I do for my yard gas tools is to remove the ethanol. I do that by adding a quart of water, shaking it and causing the water to pull the ethanol out of the gas, and then siphon out the water mix. The gasoline that is left makes my tools run better (chainsaws, lawn mower, rototiller, etc.). Too much trouble to do for the cars, though. For a car, I’ll run it a lot every few months (or more) to burn off old gas and then tank up with fresh gas. I’ve got a couple cars that don’t get driven for months at a time. My daily driver is an EV that I charge every couple weeks at home, and I have a truck that does hauling so it gets regular use. My other cars are for fun but don’t see much use.
