WASHINGTON — The Senate voted Wednesday to open debate on a bill that would codify federal protections for same-sex marriage, signaling that the legislation has sufficient Republican support to pass.
Lawmakers advanced the legislation in a 62-37 vote days after Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., vowed to proceed on an updated version of the measure released by a bipartisan group of senators.
A dozen Republicans voted with Democrats to advance the legislation: Sens. Roy Blunt, of Missouri; Richard Burr, of North Carolina; Shelley Moore Capito, of West Virginia; Joni Ernst, of Iowa; Cynthia Lummis, of Wyoming; Lisa Murkowski, of Alaska; Rob Portman, of Ohio; Dan Sullivan, of Alaska; Mitt Romney, of Utah; Thom Tillis, of North Carolina; and Todd Young, of Indiana.
Blunt, Burr and Portman are retiring from Congress at the end of this year.
The bipartisan group that crafted the bill, led by Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., signaled this week that the bill would have the 10 GOP votes needed to pass in the upper chamber during the lame-duck session.
Democrats need 10 Republicans to support the bill in order for it to overcome the 60-vote procedural hurdle before a final floor vote can take place.

I'm so old I remember when we were told gay "marriage" is just about letting the gays call themselves married, that no one would be forced to honor it.
I knew Blunt would be in there.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Bipartisan. We know better.
It’s about destroying christianity.....They want republicans like Mike Pence ,who want civil and respectful...Pence hates trump for being a bull in a china shop.....Pence will bend over, as will most repubs in congress as the gays and the dems destroy our freedoms....
Screwing his constituents on the way out because like the rest, he actually hates us little people.
Between now and Jan when the new congress is sworn we will get to really see something.
These pigs will do as much damage as they can and then head for the hills.
The republican party is dead.
GOP = Grandiose Obnoxious Politicians
Apparently GOP politicians are those people who have a total personality change on Sunday mornings.
She has turned out to be a real POS. Voted against her last time, will do so again.
For whatever reason there’s a great fear of the left in this country. And among this group of Republicans there’s a great fear of what the New York Times and others in the media will say about them.
In our culture people are afraid to say they oppose same-sex marriage. So with the bill of this nature they want to show that they are on the so-called right side of history on this issue.
RE: The republican party is dead.
We still have two choices, the Dems who hate God or are atheists and agnostics,
or
Republicans who make puffed up speeches of being holy and devout but then act to permit abortions, euthanasia and gender changes for children when the legislation comes up for a vote.
The pre-Beat Generation Henry Miller said: “They tell us in America we have freedom to vote as we choose. That is nearly blasphemy. They allow us to vote between candidate A and candidate B they chose for us, both the same, and tell us
we are free.”
It’s about cash and not fear. Corporate “America” is all aboard the homo train and GOP swampers always put out for them.
The Rs have lost most of the old social fights, including gay marriage. In fact, I think that issue is completely dead at this point. We have too many singles, too many divorced, too many living off government and too many non-religious folks (and I say that at someone that’s not religious). My point - taking a big stand on this issue is a losing issue, we have to move the country back right further before taking on the fights of 20-30 years ago. We can’t even get independents to agree on not having adult drag in school consistently!
What MORE “protection” do they need?
Pushing/authoring/joining a blatantly unconstitutional bill is sedition, and should be treated as such. Its becoming more and more clear that we cannot share this country, or this earth, with these deranged lawless totalitarian left/commies.
The never ending nightmare continues.
Chaos isn’t always by accident some help it along.
