Zelensky Visits Kherson After Russian Retreat
The New York Times ^ | November 14, 2022 | Jeffrey Gettleman

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine made an unannounced visit to the newly freed city of Kherson on Monday, reveling in perhaps the most significant success by his country’s forces since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February.

“We are, step by step, coming to all of our country,” he said to a crowd of hundreds of people, some wrapped in Ukrainian flags. “I am happy we are in Kherson.”

The president’s visit to Kherson just days after it was retaken was a tangible sign of Ukraine’s soaring morale and its growing boldness in the nearly nine-month war. Kherson, a vital Black Sea port and a gateway to Crimea, was the first major city to fall to Russian forces after the start of the invasion on Feb. 24. Russia’s decision to withdraw was a major blow to the Kremlin and its ambition to conquer all of southern Ukraine.

At the same time, there were palpable reminders that the conflict was continuing. While he was talking, explosions — possibly Ukrainian forces deactivating mines — echoed in the distance. And Russian forces remained nearby, across the Dnipro River, within striking distance, another reminder of the immediate threat to the civilian population.

Mr. Zelensky was surrounded by dozens of soldiers and police officers carrying rifles, underscoring the daring nature of the visit.

The crowd of several hundred people cheered and shouted “glory to Ukraine.”

Probably one of you're stupidest posts, congrats. Did Stalin rush to the front lines to take part in the war? Churchill? Beyond moronic

Exactly. And there may still be Russian stragglers/snipers in the city. If there were, he’d be a huge prize for them.

Putin doesn’t even leave his bunker.

Zelensky is the figurehead — the real fighters are the ordinary Ukrainians.

What’s the closest Putin has have ever come to the fighting?

Putin has been trying to run the war from bunkers hundreds of miles from the front. One reason he is losing is he doesn’t know what is really happening.

Z has taken risks and gone to the front, spoken directly to grunts, and been able to use that information to win battles.

There does not have to be fighting in the city. See post # 5 for why.

Yeah, I know. It’s all still a war zone, and he’d make a great scalp for some lone Spetsnaz to claim as a prize. Rhetorical statement to a stupid question.

Zelensky has some big cojones, that’s for sure, though. Kinda like Lincoln at Fort Stevens outside Washington in 1864.

Not exactly. The Ukrainians played this one very well. They announced a Kherson campaign in advance, and the Russians responded building up their forces there… stripping forces from the east to do it. Upon which time the Ukes cut all the bridges into the region, trapping the Russians there, and started taking out the ammo dumps. And proceeded to launch an offensive on the opposite end of the country.

Then they cut the bridge into Crimea. All the time putting pressure on Kherson from multiple directions.

At this point it became obvious to the Russian command that they could not effectively supply their forces there and had no choice but to pull out. With only pontoon bridges, the Russians couldn’t move heavy loads across the river, which includes tanks and artillery. So much of that will have been left behind.

Well played. And the area south of the river is vulnerable for all the same reasons, it’s going to be tough to keep them supplied.

Churchill visited front lines many times Wanted to land on Normandy

Took intervention by King George VI to keep him from going

Visited there several days later when things calmed down

Was on front when Allies crossed the Rhine in Feb 1945

If the Russians want to get out of this with Crimea and the land bridge intact, they need to strike a deal. Ukraine smells victory, so they won’t be interested in negotiating, so the Russians will have to bypass them and make a deal directly with the White House.

I’m not sure what the Kremlin can offer to get the White House to deal, and maybe they don’t have anything. But that’s what has to happen from their point of view. And losing that support has to be Ukraine’s greatest fear. If the US continues with its current level of support Russia will be pushed back to its pre-February lines at the least.

And if that happens Putin does not survive in power.

The battle of Gettysburg was fought in July 1863. It took Lincoln until November to visit the battlefield. James Madison never visited the battlefield where Andrew Jackson defeated the British in January 1815. Slackers.

They are looking for their talking points from RT and TASS. Russian state media is still in shock over how to spin this. In a few more days the new talking points will turn up.
