NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio — Are shopping malls on their last leg and nearing extinction?
It’s a question consumer experts have been asking for years.
However, recent data shows indoor and outdoor malls are actually showing positive gains and nearing a comeback here in Northeast Ohio.
With higher vaccination rates, baby boomers preferring in-person shopping, and a millennial generation loving nostalgia, some experts and investors believe we may have turned a corner in the retail landscape.
Take a walk through Great Northern Mall in North Olmsted and you can’t help but notice the rush of shoppers, vibrant retail spaces, and holiday decorations.
It’s the glimmer of hope and turnaround point Dan Crandall, Marketing and Business Development Manager of Great Northern says they’ve been longing for.
It's a welcome moment in an era where so many malls have shuttered operations or rebranded toward mixed outdoor use.
“They’re coming back to the malls. They wanna touch, feel and experience it—especially with the holidays this time of year!” said Crandall.
In the days when so many were shopping online due to the pandemic, 2022 actually brought a noticeable change.

During the Biden Recession about to become the Biden Depression Part Deux?
Are they crazy?
Crazy gas prices, STILL way higher than under President Trump, food prices WAY higher than under President Trump, War, diesel shortage on the horizon, interest rates climbing, job losses expected, WalMart, etc, cancelling billions of dollars of orders.....
I keep hearing all about how bad things are, but I am not really ‘seeing it’ here. There is indeed a mini-boom happening.
Across for a major luxury mall lifestyle center there is another lower end luxury center being built across the street!
I have seen the video from places in California where whole strips are shuttered, but am starting to wonder if it is more to do with the demographic leaving blue states?
As a small business owner myself, I have more business than I can handle (not due to staff shortage) and going to be posting the best year in 13 years.
Shipping is astronomically expensive and you now have to pay taxes on online sales even on items that are tax exempt due to the difficulty of online payments.
Overhead for online sellers has really increased so the much disdained brick and mortar operations are becoming competitive
I have really cut back on online purchases for these reasons
The days where people run to the mall to test drive merchandise and then go buy it online sales dominance may be coming to an end
I saw the end of my job coming so I started up a phone where I was going to throw away the phone number after getting a new (part-time) job.
I signed up for ZipRecruiter which has done nothing but spam me endlessly, every day of the week, now along with two others with software bots pretending to be real people (recruiters, ostensibly).
Ran into a friend at the gas station a few hours ago. She’s working at a place very close - I may go part time there just to put some more money into tax withholding for the year and a small amount for me to take home. Dunno.
Not sure what I’ll be doing after the first of the year. I’ll try to ride out the snow with my SS - end of March is when it usually clears around here.
But I expected a FLOOD of offers - I have not been contacted by even ONE employer. I don’t post my full resume anymore - it was too technical and scared people off - plus I really couldn’t find work after 2008 (did do some small contract stuff in 2009). So it’s a weird situation.
It’s Ohio, kinda splains itself.
Look at a chart of SPG Simon Property Group, the largest mall operator, over the last 6 months or so. Apparently the market doesn’t think malls are dead
"I signed up for ZipRecruiter"
I am familiar with SPG. In my area, it seems like half their malls are undergoing major conversions from traditional retail centers to mixed-use properties or simply large condo/apartment developments.
please everyone
do not build more commercial space
bump
I liked indoor malls; they’re efficient for the shopper. Online shopping is efficient, too, but shipping costs are creeping up.I can go either way.
Or maybe I just like the idea of malls because of nostalgia — memories of good times and a different place in my life.
But it's dying. Major stores are leaving...lots and lots of empty space. I spend a lot of time there 1) because it's close 2) because it's a great place to walk and 3) because it has a Wegman's supermarket. When I go there it's *always* almost entirely devoid of shoppers.
The internet will eventually destroy the American mall...and it might be soon.
The mall I referred to in Post #13 already has a pretty big condo complex added to it. Last time I checked (a couple of years ago) the cheapest unit you could find there was $600K and many of the units were selling for $800K and up.
Malls become hangouts for the people that annoy you.
That’s nothing a few teens couldn’t fix.
Nothing I’d rather do then pay too much for products, while being locked inside with bused in ghetto trash…
I'm not totally surprised. I'm buying a lot these days - mainly consumables that are only going to go up in price since the dollar is being turned into trash. I'm buying basics like soap, toothpaste, first aid supplies, etc, but I can imagine others buying perfumes, etc.
I'm also having tons of work done on my home, because I know it's only going to cost twice as much one year from now. My house is old and can absorb a lot of work. I expect all of that, adjusted up for inflation, to come back to me when I sell the place in a couple of years.
I guess the biggest difference between today and times past is that, in the cities, you've got to be better at dodging bullets. Not here though. I've moved so far out into the country that we have to pipe in the sunshine.
good. Cleveland is a great place to live.
I like indoor malls much better than the open air market concept.
