This was originally intended to be an Armistice Day (Veterans Day) song.

Note that the song incorporates a line from the Confederate anthem "Dixie" as well as the Union Army song "Marching Through Georgia." The woke idea that Southern partisans were racist traitors was not yet in vogue.

There's also a reference to "every old GAR." The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a society comprised of Union veterans of the Civil War--and by the early 20th century, they were getting up in years. Its last member died in 1956.
