Ukrainian forces can retake the strategic southern city of Kherson from Russian troops, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Thursday, in what would be a major defeat for Russia in its invasion of its neighbor.
Austin's remarks coincided with a Russian-installed official in Kherson region saying Moscow was likely to pull its troops from the west bank of the Dnipro River, signaling a significant retreat, if confirmed.
Ukraine said it was still fighting in the area and was wary of the occupying Russian forces setting a trap.
Austin did not answer a question about whether Russian forces were preparing to leave. But, in perhaps his most optimistic comments yet on the Ukrainian counter-offensive, expressed confidence in their ability to beat back Russian forces.
"On the issue of whether the Ukrainians can take the remaining territory on the west side of the Dnipro river and in Kherson, I certainly believe that they have the capability to do that," Austin told a news conference at the Pentagon.
"Most importantly, the Ukrainians believe they have the capability to do that. We have seen them engage in a very methodical but effective effort to take back their sovereign territory."

OK it’s easy for me to be an armchair desktop strategist. I hope they get Russia out but this sounds “too good to be true”. They can re-take it with Russia withdrawing of course, but the question is why is Russia withdrawing?
Winter is coming. Could be a supply line thing. Could be Russia is weary. Could be a trap. If Ukraine retakes it, can they hold it and supply it in the winter?

The problem for Russia is all of their forces and supplies need to go across the wide Dnieper River. Those crossings are under constant surveillance and in range of Uke artillery.
That makes it very expensive to keep forces on the west bank resupplied.

Compare today to September 1. For two months Ukraine is taking back Kherson, little by little.
Pretty good for a army that is taking over 10:1 casualties, can't use or maintain modern equipment, and was wiped out months ago.
How is Ukraine supposed to force Russia to retreat without robust, effective combat air, guaranteed supplies of artillery shells and an ample tank force, not to mention healthy soldiers to operate these weapon systems? The answer is simple–they won’t and they can’t. The Ukrainian armed forces are degraded severely today compared to what they could put on the field of battle on February 24th. I challenge anyone to make the case that Ukraine is stronger, more capable today than they were eight months ago.
The foolish analysis I highlighted above is but a symptom of a sickness that has infected the West (and I am not talking about Covid). The descent of the West into the thicket of lies is not confined to indulging fantasies about the military situation Ukraine. The corrupted culture of the West also proselytizes that there are more than two genders, that men can be pregnant, and that windmills and solar panels are sufficient to power modern societies. Hell, we were told the Covid vaccine would keep people from getting Covid. I think the underlying cause for the delusional thinking that dominates Western economics, politics, medicine and popular culture is that the West has adopted a rigid, intolerant ideology that is reminiscent of the intellectual sclerosis rooted in Marxism that led to the death of the Soviet Union. The Russian people learned some hard truths in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet empire. I believe that the people of the United States and Europe are going to experience a similar rude awakening. And it won’t be pretty.
