Sorry to bring you another item of news focusing on indicators of poor economic conditions, but analyst outfit Counterpoint Research has just revealed data that finds sales of smartphones have dipped to levels not seen since 2014.
Ahhhh 2014: the year in which Apple debuted 4G in the iPhone 6 and gave the world its first Watch, the Heartbleed flaw in OpenSSL gave us a glimpse of a future in which bugs had brands and widely-used FOSS projects could make the whole world stop to patch, and the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie introduced the audio cassette to a whole new generation. Around 300 million smartphones shipped during that year's third quarter – the same number that made it out the factory gate this year.
"Most major vendors continued experiencing annual shipment declines in the third quarter of 2022. Russia's escalating war in Ukraine, ongoing China-US political distrust and tensions, growing inflationary pressures across regions, a growing fear of recession, and weakening national currencies, all caused a further dent in consumer sentiment, hitting already weakened demand," said Counterpoint senior analyst Harmeet Singh Walia. "This is also adding to a slow but sustained lengthening of smartphone replacement cycles with smartphones becoming more durable and as technology advancement slows."

I used my original 3G iPhone until I couldn’t anymore. I now have a refurbished iPhone 7 that works just fine.

I’ve never had an iphone...thankfully. I have all the problems I can handle by having a computer. Ahhh the good ole days.
Never have
Never will
I had a flip phone that worked just fine.
“ I used my original 3G iPhone until I couldn’t anymore”
Me, too. Then I got a two-year old, unpopular surplus model Samsung 4G for $60 bucks. Works fine for me since I don’t use many sensitive-info apps and don’t need high-end features.
We have iPhones. A couple days ago I drove my wife to a medical appointment at a different building in the city than she used to go to. Dropped her off near the building and told her to message me with the office location, while I looked for parking in the congested area. Found a parking spot 6 blocks away, and then realized I forgot to bring my iPhone.
Panic set in, as I didn't know where she was and she wouldn't be able to call me. We are so dependent on these mobile phones, and forgot what it was like decades ago when we had no phones. Decided to drive home and retrieve the phone, an 1-1/2 hour trip, made it back to the area just as she finished her medical app't and was calling me! Next time I'll write down the information!
Thanks. I’ll look into it. My son wants to give me his 12.
I’ve owned one smartphone, an iPhone, which I purchased from Verizon sometime in 2013 or 2014. It’s most likely a 5S. I don’t use it for anything other than calls, and the occasional text message from CVS Caremark. I hate the thing. Once it dies or becomes incompatible with 5G, if that ever arrives here, I won’t be getting another one.
One of our younger DNA models just pulled the plug on his career of 20+ years.
He asked HR if he could buy his battered and beatup I Phone 7.
She looked at the phone and said write on one of your business cards that your paid a $ for it. Keep the phone and you will get a free month.
He donated the $ to their coffee pot fund. His phone shows the added month.
My wife pushed me to go from a flip phine to one of the damn things. I still have no use for anything but phone calls, and it is infuriatingly more difficult to do that.
All that pokery is maddening.
Same here. I don’t use many apps.
“And why would anybody want to replace their existing smartphone (except if it was damaged, destroyed, lost or stolen)?”
5G
Faster Processor
Larger screen
Better screen
More memory
Longer battery life
Better camera
Faster wifi
Faster Bluetooth
“Change is at a maximum before a system reaches equilibrium.”
But change slows down as younger closer to equilibrium.
“They’re really pushing 5g. Hopefully I can get a 4g model.”
5G phones have 4G
I despise smart phones, but rely on mine for navigation. Other than that, i prefer a flip phone.
You can turn off 5G on a 5G phone, and only use 4G.
“The “big” feature for the iPhone 15 next year is likely to be USB-C support, driven by government mandate and not by any innovation.”
USB-C / 3 / 4 continues to update. Apple still has 2012 technology.
