Stop worrying and love the bomb: Proxy war with Russia is sliding toward apocalypse
Salon ^ | 27-Oct-22 | Chris Hedges

Joe Biden, who doesn't always seem to be quite sure where he is or what he is supposed to be saying, is being propped up in the I-am-a-bigger-man-than-you contest with Vladimir Putin by a coterie of rabid warmongers who have orchestrated over 20 years of military fiascos. They are salivating at the prospect of taking on Russia, and then, if there is any habitation left on the globe, China. Trapped in the polarizing mindset of the Cold War — where any effort to de-escalate conflicts through diplomacy is considered appeasement, a perfidious Munich moment — they smugly push the human species closer and closer toward obliteration. Unfortunately for us, one of these true believers is Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Ukraine, media censorship and the ruthless politics of permanent war

"Putin is saying he is not bluffing. Well, he cannot afford bluffing, and it has to be clear that the people supporting Ukraine and the European Union and the Member States, and the United States and NATO are not bluffing neither," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned. "Any nuclear attack against Ukraine will create an answer, not a nuclear answer but such a powerful answer from the military side that the Russian Army will be annihilated."

Annihilated. Are these people insane?

You know we are in trouble when Donald Trump is the voice of reason.

Are you “open to negotiations” if Mexico claims Los Angeles? I would guess not. Now tell me who the “liar” is. It’s quite obvious you just want Ukraine to surrender to Russia’s genocidal assault. Unsurprisingly, they don’t want to.

The problem with nukes is if you are really worried or right that the other side will strike, you better strike first or you are going to be dead.

Some sanity coming from the left now...

Democrats always try to look sane and 'conservative' before a major election. It's how they trick citizens into voting for them. Trust me, after the election democrats will be back to backing Biden pumping billions into protecting Ukraine's borders while ignoring our border.

Remember, Ukraine launders money for the worlds' 'elites' and gives high paying jobs to their drug addicted, whore-monger sons. They will let us die on that hill to keep their perks going...

Well, that comment is bovine excrement in my opinion.

Sorry, but Russia is open to negotiations.

That's a sham offer. Russia only just recently announced that it has annexed 4 oblasts in Ukraine, and said they were now a permanent part of Russia. Is Russia willing to negotiate away that?

If Russia truly is willing to do that, then it could cut the legs right out of western support for Ukraine by announcing it. "Hey, we're willing to pull back to the pre-February 2022 borders if we can negotiate issues like the presence of NATO troops in Ukraine, etc.. And the terms of U.N.-supervised elections in the Donbass."

If Russia said all that publicly, the result likely would be a collapse in western support for Ukraine if Ukraine refused that offer. But Russia hasn't and won't do say any of that publicly, because it isn't willing to do so.

I thought Conservatives support the concepts of Borders...

Yes, OUR borders. Not a corrupt nation's borders.

That leaves the question of why Russia wants to engage in negotiations if it knows its demands won't be met. A waste of time, right?

Not for Russia. The war isn't very popular at home, and an seemingly endless war is even less popular. So to tamp down domestic complaints and discontent in the military, they tell everyone "we're negotiating to try to end this war. We need to hold firm for just awhile longer until we negotiate a fair peace." The prospect of imminent peace will make the people more willing to tolerate things they otherwise wouldn't. It's an old trick.

And that's why Ukraine is saying no to negotiations where they already know they will fail. Because they don't want to hand Russia a bit of propaganda when they know the negotiations will go nowhere.

That would be an invasion of OUR country. Quite different from a border war between two nations that we have no interest in, nor any commitment with

The fact that you cannot justify our involvement in this and try to equate it to an invasion of us or NATO demonstrates the weakness of your position.

Putin insanely called dibs on a Ukrainian city of 800,000 people that Russian occupiers have never set foot in. The whole idea that “negotiations” should be based on such attitudes is bonkers and Kremlin supporting gaslighting at its finest.

The intellectual dishonesty is brazen on “one side” here. They just want Ukraine to surrender and the best way to do that is freeze the conflict and lock in Russia’s current position. Oh, well. Leopards don’t change their spots.

How do you know they are not?

I hope you are not married and make similar ASSumptions about what your wife thinks instead of actually talking to her.

Part of negotiations is finding out where each side stands and to find common ground.

Negotiations often fail, but you do not know until you try.

You are not in favor of trying. That makes you mentally ill.

Gee, people who actually know something about Russia still see Putin's approval as high.

Rather than spouting propaganda from pro-war sources, try to seek neutral opinions and informed opinions.

I have no problem justifying US security interests in Europe.
Kicking Russian corruption and influence out of Europe is certainly in American interest. Economically, politically and morally. President Trump agrees and his policies reflect that. Economically because exporting energy to Europe will create good jobs in the US. Politically because Russian corruption buys Anti US political support in Europe. Morally because no people should live under the tyrannical Kremlin boot. You don’t agree. That’s ok.

You two do realize that the US was negotiating with Japan towards the end of the war?

Hardliners who didn’t want to negotiate were responsible for the US dropping atomic bombs.

You know, it kind of goes along with the idea that during the plandemic, the people who used to tell us to question authority were lecturing us not to EVER question THEIR authority.

...and there were FReepers during the pandemic who also sided with the left, just as there are FReepers siding with the left over Ukraine.

You’ve no idea how much fun I’ve been having with my lefty loosey hippy Uncle. He started texting me about this Ukie/Russian &@$t. I just started throwing all that hippy dippy crap back at him “What If They Gave A War And Nobody Came?” and “Girls Say Yes to Boys Who Say No”, and “War Is Not Healthy For Children and Other Living Things. I thought he was going to have a stroke.
