In math, the results were especially devastating, representing the steepest declines ever recorded on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the nation’s report card, which tests a broad sampling of fourth and eighth graders and dates to the early 1990s.

All according to plan, and the trend pre-dates the pandemic.

The only reason that I’m not sure why this happened is because there are so many things screwing up schools (New Math, COVID Lockdowns, pervert teachers teaching gender studies instead of math, etc.) that its hard to choose.

Govt education caters to lazy, stupid teachers who gravitate toward subjects that require the least amount of preparation on their part. Why would a teacher actually learn her lesson on physics when she can coast with crap material about gender equality.

"Those who can't ...... teach."

Math should be about the easiest subject to teach remotely, since it essentially consists of memorizing a lot of facts and practicing a variety of rule-based techniques.

The failure seems to be a lack of enforcement of doing homework, which is how math is really learned.

Yup.

They say it's because of the pandemic. But it's all because of government action and fear-mongering. It didn't have to be this way, but this is the way they wanted it.

Local private schools and bold school districts that stayed open did NOT suffer these loses. In fact, they prevented the losses from being even greater

“across almost all demographic groups”

ALMOST ALL. Which demographic group did not fall? What did they do differently that produced their positive result?

Can someone with access to the NYT tell us if they revealed the successful groups, and if so which they were?
