The Liz Truss tragicomedy, almost by accident, showed that we are a country in terrible debt. We live on a reputation for solvency that we no longer deserve.
Jeremy Hunt's cancellation of the Truss Package on Monday morning was delivered and timed to placate the money markets. Our supposedly sovereign Parliament had to wait hours to be told the same thing.
Let us look at the extent of the mess which this crisis has revealed, like a flash of lightning in pitch darkness which shows a traveller he is on the edge of a precipice.
In a frantic attempt to overcome the combined effects of our reckless welfare system and our pitiful schools, we are resorting once again to mass immigration to find people who will work hard for realistic wages. Our national idol-the NHS-is hideously expensive and often disastrously bad. All the money in the world could not fix it.
How quickly inflation, that horrible corrupting fungus, has become normal. The quickest way to wreck a society is to debauch its currency. Inflation has been hugely worsened by the COVID panic and our weird enthusiasm for foreign wars...

Soon the major British parties will be divided into Hindu and Muslim factions.
Hitchens raises all the hot buttons as well including immigration, drugs, crime etc.
He doesn’t forget the COVID and Ukraine manias and their destructive impact on wasteful spending-inflation.
She had the potential to be an excellent PM.
Based on what?
All manner of special interests got on what looked like the winning train, so competing factions with very different desires develop inside the governing party. This makes it hard to agree on a common program, and politics just becomes a matter of shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic, because the party needs to appease all the factions.
And we, the US, held down by trillions of dollars of debt are going to face similar problems to the British in the near future. Remember Carville saying he wanted to be the bond market, because the bond market makes all the decisions? Politicians have been ignoring the bond market for years -- Biden and Pelosi/Schumer -- most of all, but it's going to have it's say soon enough.
Bra size...sarc
I think we may have gotten to that point in evaluating female political leader forgive my sin.
Hitchens might as well have been commenting on the United States.
“Soon the major British parties will be divided into Hindu and Muslim factions.”
That is absolutely right. The whites have committed voluntary genocide.
And that’s true for the rest of western Europe as well, and the US also.
Their (White’s) love of diversity and multiculturalism and self loathing is leading to their deserved demise.
We are on the way but the trick right now is this the US pushes the UK and Europe to get in the mud with Russia and also pushes confrontation with China.
It hurts all of them economically in the end and drives economic activity towards the USA but our day of reckoning is only postponed not ended.
Well, her tax cuts (which she was forced to abandon) were good policy and would eventually have helped Britain’s economy.
Forced? Then she’s weak.
The question is:
Who will execute my wishes on the political stage?
We have been warned about this in the past.. Read the bible...
People google "shortest UK prime minister" and get "Lizz Truss 44 days"
People google "shortest Russian prime minister" and get "Vladimir Putin 5feet 5 inches"
“Why can’t Boris get back into power?“
One possible question.
I have no power over it as Hitchens points out the people of the UK bear responsibility for their mistakes.
I can offer my thoughts about it it’s really sad in the end.
It’s not that she’s weak; it’s that her party is wimpy. Too many CINOs.
