MORRIS — A 10-year-old boy was attacked by a bear Sunday morning, state officials say.

Environmental Conservation police and state troopers responded to a report that a black bear had attacked the boy in Morris around 11 a.m. Sunday, a Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesperson said.

The boy was taken by ambulance to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for medical treatment, the spokesperson said, noting the child’s injuries appear to be non-life-threatening.

"The bear was still present near the scene and was located and euthanized by EnCon police," they said.

Why is it an encroachment by the deer and the bears being in the same area as people when the bears and deer were there thousands of years before the people came in? Maybe before the area was turned into suburbia the people should have figured out a way to protect themselves from disturbing the bears first. Killing them is not going to make them go away unless you kill all of them. And if you think a way of co existence can’t be done, ask the American Indian. Oh, sorry, the people coming in did the same thing to the American Indian.

Let's put it another way.

If we can make venison a regular part of our diet again, then the demand for deer meat will rise. This will bring more hunters into the mix. In the more densely populated areas where shotguns and bows are not practical, they could lay out some deer traps.

This will thin out the deer which in my opinion will send the bears back into the deep forest. Then again, what does bear taste like? Mixed opinions there. I would be open to trying bear meat if it was made available.

My In-Laws live in a suburb of Asheville, NC. It’s a residential area, and they are overrun with bears. Whenever someone needs to go outside, they set off their car alarms to scare any bears away. My MIL saw one sleeping in the carport. And they saw a young woman jog down the hill, then run back up at breakneck speed with a black bear right behind her.

Stayed the night in Litchfield at a friend’s place that is along a road but with woods behind the house. The next day was trash collection. When I left early that next morning, every trash can at every house on the road was knocked over and rummaged through.

...a report that a black bear had attacked....

I believe “Black Bear” is a proper noun. Why no capitalization?

“ Maybe I’ll put them out again and use the squirrels for target practice.”

Why not attract the bears and use them for target practice?
A bear hide would be awesome to have!

“...what does bear taste like?”

Many people I’ve talked with think bear meat is a little like beef stew, but with “a little stronger texture and a little gamier flavor. Personally I’ve had it in Alaska but prefer moose more as it is richer and goes better with other meal stuffs. The best I’ve had is in a stew in Galena, AK, made by the protestant minister. Good stuff.

Don’t hold your breath on making venison a regular part of any diet today as it is a tie between the ecologists and PETA as to who has more power in their control over us. I might say it would be closer to soylent green before they would open season on wild game. And not the food put out by Soylent Nutrition, Inc.
