HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -- Hawaii Island police have identified the badly composed body discovered on Tuesday at a residence in Mountain View.

Officials said identified the victim as 47-year-old James Paul Phelps of a Lehua Street address, in Mountain View.

Authorities said they responded the scene shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday after police say a caller reported going to check on the welfare of an acquaintance and discovering a foul odor coming from within.

Responding officers said they located the decomposing body on the floor of the residence.

An autopsy was performed and the forensic pathologist concluded that the victim died as a result of a single gunshot wound to the head.

Police said the case has officially been ruled a homicide.

Authorities said a suspect has not been identified and the motive behind the killing is under investigation.

This story will be updated.

"Good place to score some ice…"

Sadly, I see that almost every day :\
I don't go to the store at night.
(Remember the 7-11 employee who chopped off another guy's arm a couple of months ago? That is right down the street from me :P)

Yeah, on the border of Waikiki and Ala Moana.

Thanks. I’ve been to Waikiki when I was young.

I’ve spent a bunch of time in Kailua-Kona as an adult.

Actually, I was trying to get a place either in Pearle City or Salt Lake, but all I could find was here :P

I prefer my surroundings to be a bit quieter ;)
At least some nice bikinis walk by pretty often :D

(Would still rather be back in Japan though )

Chicks wear thong bikinis in HI...I dig that.(on fit chicks only...)

I’d like to visit Japan. I would probably only spend a day in Tokyo, if the stories of cost of living are true.
I’d like to see the rural Japanese, and see if some old traditional areas still exist.

I lived in the countryside and loved it.
If you want more traditional, you must go to Kyoto.. very beautiful.

AND.. if you are lucky (in the backstreets of Kyoto), you may see some Maiko:

Man, thinking that everything was copacetic, maybe took an extra hit.

"Copacetic". Now there's a word I haven't heard in a while. It's a word that's so obscure that the Microsoft Word dictionary provides no synonyms for it, but I worked with a guy years ago who used it about every 3rd sentence.

I could absolutely live in Japan. Spent many years there and have friends I am so close to we consider each other family. Just before COVID myself and a friend were looking at an old home for sale in a village near Hiroshima. I prefer rural Japan, I like the area around Yamaguchi Prefecture on the Inland Sea side of the island.

Unlike Hawaii, in Japan I went to a 7-11 at 1 am on a balmy night. Ordered some yakitori and a coffee then relaxed with friends at tables outside the 7-11 until 3 am.

First trip to Hawaii was 1976, really nice but rough in some areas, last trip it was sad to see how far it has declined. Drugs seemed to be the catalyst. Would not hang out at a convenience store at 1 am in Honolulu.

My family was sent to Hawaii just before my 5th birthday. We took a train from San Diego to San Francisco. A bus delivered us to the wharf where we boarded a US Navy ship to sail to Honolulu. I turned 5 during the voyage. We were fixed up with a hotel room in Waikiki while awaiting our quarters. We moved into 1158 Cakon St. I attended Pearl Harbor Elementary school for kindergarten and first grade. We left in June 1963 and flew to San Diego on a 707. Lindbergh Field was still using the east terminal at that point in time. I've never been back to Hawaii since.

I pulled up Google maps to see if my old quarters was still there. It has been bulldozed and replaced with single family homes. Cakon has been sealed into a court instead of the path it had as Cakon St connecting to Radford Drive.

It’s fun reminiscing.

I still remember looking at Diamond Head and thinking how cool it was.

***the Hawaii Five-O theme song***

Seeing this made me think of the older HAWAIIAN EYE from the 1950s.

Mid to late 70s, my then pre teen daughter used it ad nauseam, until she finally out grew it.

It was an interesting chapter growing up. The black sand beach, the "blow hole", geckos on the curtain rods. Running through the "fog" when spraying for mosquitos. My parents wouldn't let me stay up to see the nuclear flash from the test that occurred while we were there.
