I understand differences in policy: “I think we should tax the rich / I think we should tax the rich less” or “We should be friends with Russia / We must oppose Russia”. That stuff is very natural; people disagree.
But US politics now consists of wild fantasies. We get branded “conspiracy theorists” although our wild fantasies are proven to be correct on many occasions. The Democrats spin yarns of Trump wanting congress members killed by a mob so that he can impose martial law, and the media nods sagely and says, “He’s literally Hitler.”

Why would you want your supposed own supporters to commit acts of murder against democratically elected representatives, even those you don’t like or who oppose you, and then declare martial law. No one actually thinks they could get away with that, and no one with two brain cells actually thinks Trump is dumb enough to think he could get away with that. At the VERY LEAST, Trump was upset that they were going to go ahead and certify the electoral results, and had a schadenfreude against it. Everyone knows that the gathering was a first amendment protest and he ask for them to be peaceful! The shhadenfreude part is when you don’t consciously support the bad thing, and even actively oppose it, but secretly still kind of want it. Not violence and death, of course, but the stopping of the procedure. I will fully admit I would have been happy if the procedure of ratifying the electors was stopped. Guess what? Democrats are too.
