Climate protesters defaced a Van Gogh painting of sunflowers at London’s National Gallery by throwing cans of tomato soup at it, BBC News reported.
Video footage of the Friday incident showed two activists in “Just Stop Oil” T-shirts opening cans of what appeared to be tomato soup. They poured the contents onto the priceless painting and then glued their hands to the wall.
According to the gallery, the painting was under glass and not damaged.
"At just after 11am this morning two people entered Room 43 of the National Gallery,” the museum said in a statement. "The pair appeared to glue themselves to the wall adjacent to Van Gogh's Sunflowers (1888). They also threw a red substance – what appears to be tomato soup – over the painting.”
"There is some minor damage to the frame but the painting is unharmed,” the museum added.
The Metropolitan Police arrested two people for vandalizing the painting.
The Metropolitan Police said: "Officers were rapidly on scene at the National Gallery this morning after two Just Stop Oil protesters threw a substance over a painting and then glued themselves to a wall.
"Both have been arrested for criminal damage and aggravated trespass. Officers are now de-bonding them."
In video footage of the incident, a protester screams: "What is worth more? Art or life? Is it worth more than food? Worth more than justice? Are you more concerned about the protection of a painting or the protection of our planet and people?"
She also said the soup represented hungry families who “can't even afford to heat a tin of soup."
This was the second time the group has defaced a painting in the gallery.

Looks to me like something Dr. Who ought to consider fixing:

(and any excuse to post Karen Gillan should be utilized)
And if I”m not mistaken, the painting in question shows up at about the 4:17 mark in the clip given above in my reply #61.
They need wood shampoos!
What does Van Gogh do to have his painting throw tomato soup at. Is he a climate denier? Liberals are crazy...
I don't understand: Are they against only sunflower oil, or against olive oil, rapeseed oil, and other vegetable oils, too?
Regards,
The drug use makes crazy things happen.
I’d prefer Jack Regan of the Sweeney Flying Squad.
Let them remain glued to the wall. In fact, put on some additional restraints to keep them there for a really, really long time....
Mass hysteria over something seems to be a part of the human condition. In the 15th century it was witchcraft and witches. In the 21st it's climate change and people who use fossil fuels. The level of stubborn impenetrable proudly exhibited ignorance and malice is the same. Those two pathetic female wasters of oxygen are no different than the Salem accusers who were:
"At the center of the Salem witch trials were a core group of accusers, all girls and young women ranging in age from nine to 20, who screamed, writhed, barked and displayed other horrifying symptoms they claimed were signs of Satanic possession. "We like to think we're an enlightened society and look down on the fools who believed in witches, but now we have fools who believe in human caused climate change
‘two activists in “Just Stop Oil” T-shirts’
What the hell do art museums have to do with the oil industry?
Van Gogh used oil-based paints so they have to destroy them? What about the oil-based polyester in those stupid protesters’ t-shirts?
“cannot penetrate an oil painting”
Good point, but I wonder if an oil painting that is a few hundred years old is going to hold up as well as one that is freshly painted. There are going to be plenty of microscopic cracks that water can seep through.
That sounds good. I don’t have a sensitive palate but most tomato soups always seem too acidic for me. A mellower taste would be nice.
Remove the painting, leave them glued to the wall and don’t feed them.🤔
There is typically oil such as soybean oil or canola oil in canned soups. Have ever witnessed how greasy it is when you clean dishes that touched it?
“But no. They gotta give poor old Van Gogh an earful.”
“I see what you did there.”
And I hear ya.
Good, because if they had destroyed it, I'd favor the death
penalty.
People who think they can destroy great works admired by
billions of people, need to flame out.
They need to be charged as terrorists.
The Taliban did it, ironically.
But if you quickly wipe it down and then apply some sort of cleansing solution to it, it will not have the time needed to either dissolve or penetrate the oil paint.
Protected by glass pane. The frame was damaged according to reports.
