Climate protesters throw tomato soup on Van Gogh painting

Climate protesters defaced a Van Gogh painting of sunflowers at London’s National Gallery by throwing cans of tomato soup at it, BBC News reported.

Video footage of the Friday incident showed two activists in “Just Stop Oil” T-shirts opening cans of what appeared to be tomato soup. They poured the contents onto the priceless painting and then glued their hands to the wall.

According to the gallery, the painting was under glass and not damaged.

"At just after 11am this morning two people entered Room 43 of the National Gallery,” the museum said in a statement. "The pair appeared to glue themselves to the wall adjacent to Van Gogh's Sunflowers (1888). They also threw a red substance – what appears to be tomato soup – over the painting.”

"There is some minor damage to the frame but the painting is unharmed,” the museum added.

The Metropolitan Police arrested two people for vandalizing the painting.

The Metropolitan Police said: "Officers were rapidly on scene at the National Gallery this morning after two Just Stop Oil protesters threw a substance over a painting and then glued themselves to a wall.

"Both have been arrested for criminal damage and aggravated trespass. Officers are now de-bonding them."

In video footage of the incident, a protester screams: "What is worth more? Art or life? Is it worth more than food? Worth more than justice? Are you more concerned about the protection of a painting or the protection of our planet and people?"

She also said the soup represented hungry families who “can't even afford to heat a tin of soup."

This was the second time the group has defaced a painting in the gallery.

Just what I was thinking. Campbells tomato soup is SO watered down now that we stopped buying it. Tastes like sugar water. We buy Mom’s brand. But that glass over the painting, thank goodness.

Can’t they just leave them glued to the wall? Maybe with a bowl of tomato soup just out of reach? Play stupid games...

"What is worth more? Art or life?

In your case I'd choose art - every time.

To answer their question: Art makes life more worthwhile. Destroying it doesn’t do anyone a bit of good. Go volunteer in a soup kitchen, you care so much about people’s lives.

Pikers all

They they used tins of Cambells' soup...with tomatoes harvested by oppressed slave labor and forced to grow in chemicals

As for gluing their hands to the wall they used toxic chemicals from big chemical companies

They should just use a nail gun.

80% of k-12 graduates think climate change is the most important issue facing the country and most want a career to solve the crisis, that's a problem with K-12.

Wouldn’t it have made more sense for them to deface an Andy Warhol painting. I mean, if they must deface a painting.

Are we sure they’re protestors and not just Warhol fans?

If the police would simply let them stay glued to the walls for a week this end quickly.

No food. No water. Just let them sit.

That can of soup could’ve fed someone who needed it. Idiots.

Are they saying they’ve put glass into the frame as one would for a watercolor painting?

Not that these idiots have two brain cells to rub together anyway, but they should’ve targeted Andy Warhol’s Campbell soup painting.
