US Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont was hospitalized Thursday after he felt unwell at his McLean, Virginia, home, his office said.
As a precaution, the 82-year-old Democrat was taken to a Washington-area hospital for tests. At the recommendation of his doctors, he was expected to remain in the hospital overnight for observation.
Leahy, the longest-serving sitting senator, is not seeking re-election in November.
By the time his term expires in January 2023, Leahy will have served for 48 years in the Senate.
In June, he fell and broke his hip. At the time, his staff said he was expected to make a full recovery. In July, he underwent a second surgery on his hip.

48 years? That’s not a call to serve, it is a career. Here in Florida, Loranne Ausley (D) has an ad that claims the Republicans are trying to end her career. Career? So she just admitted to being a “career politician”! That is what we have in Congress and the Senate. Maybe this needs to stop. It’s called term limits.
My modest proposal is an no age limit and a IQ higher than 78. Leahy would never have served in the Senate for a day let alone 48 years.
At Leahy’s age, the real warning sign is when you feel well.

One of my wife’s aunts passed away unexpectedly last week at 77.
Her son said she and him were just sitting in the livingroom watching TV and talking, and she got quiet for a few minutes and he touched her hand and she was gone...............
Repeal the 17th Amendment!
Some Freeper (and I wish I had saved it!) did research showing that prior to the 17th Amendment there were very few long-term Senate careers. Why? Prior to the 17th Amendment the Senators were selected by their respective state legislatures. They had to keep a close affinity with the needs of their states. Every state legislator or state grandee saw themselves in that seat so there was always competition for the job! (I still would not object to term limits!) The political action was home in the states - being governor for example! There were long term careers in the House - Henry Clay is a good example. Daniel Webster who served in both the House and the Senate was reluctant to leave the House when the Mass legislature made him a Senator. In his mind the power was in the House! (And that makes sense you’re closer to the money!) That being said term limits in the House does make sense! Pelosi, Nadler and others are good examples that have been there too long!

Apparently there’s already a special election next month to replace Leahy and it will be won by the Democrat, but if Leahy were to ride on ahead imminently, it could make a difference in the lame duck session

The evil forces are working hard to further concentrate all power in Washington. If they get their way, the states will effectively cease to exist and we will no longer be a federal republic of sovereign states.
