Exiled Nicaraguan journalist Berta Valle ‘terrified’ by Russian troops in Central America

An exiled Nicaraguan journalist says she fears a growing presence of Russsian troops in her homeland as the country grows increasingly isolated on the world stage.

Berta Valle — wife of imprisoned Nicaraguan opposition leader and presidential candidate Felix Maradiaga — told The Post on Monday that Nicaraguans are “terrified” of dictator Daniel Ortega’s decision to welcome Russian soldiers to the Central American country after seeing what they’ve done in Ukraine.

“Ortega invited the Russian military into Nicaragua. Publicly, he says Russia is supporting the military training of the Nicaraguan military. But we are terrified, because our country is hosting an army that commits atrocities against civilians in Ukraine,” Valle said.

Ortega issued a decree in June allowing foreign soldiers to operate inside Nicaraguan borders for various training, emergency response and law enforcement purposes.

The law comes as Ortega’s regime distances itself from the West and draws closer to the Kremlin — expelling the European Union’s ambassador over the weekend while criminally prosecuting the relatives of his political opponents.

Oslo Freedom Forum One of the few world leaders to back Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Ortega also recently signed a deal with Russia’s state-run radio network Sputnik, allowing the Kremlin mouthpiece to broadcast in Nicaragua.

Valle and others have expressed the fear that Russian boots on the ground in Nicaragua will help the dictatorship — run by Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo — to further develop its collective repression techniques.

Western analysts also worry Russia will use Nicaragua as a base for further espionage and intelligence-gathering operations.

“It’s very frustrating,” Valle said of the situation in Nicaragua. “The Ortega family has taken over all aspects of civil society. People are

Bernie Sanders under scrutiny for backing Sandinistas in 1980s
New York Post ^ | February 24, 2020 | Carl Campanile

Bernie Sanders’ praise of Cuba and Fidel Castro on Sunday is just the tip of the iceberg.

The Democratic front-runner had a romance with the Marxist Sandinista government of Nicaragua in the 1980s and even honeymooned with wife Jane in the Soviet Union in 1988.

Hillary Clinton’s opposition research book on Sanders from 2016 — posted by WikiLeaks after the emails of her campaign chairman, John Podesta, were hacked — has a whole section on the then-Burlington, Vt., mayor’s trip to Nicaragua and chummy support of the Sandinistas in 1985....

Leaky Leahy and Bernie Sanders were also schmoozing the Sandinistas. Bernie’s wife was also vacationing in the USSR as a guest of the Russians in that period.

(Obama spiritual advisor Rev. Jim) Wallis, together with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright (Obama’s former pastor of 20 years) “rallied support for the communist Nicaraguan regime and protested actions by the United States which supported the anti-communist Contra rebels” (Family World News, February 2009, p. 7).

Third, Wallis and his Sojourners community of fellow-travelers believe Fidel Castro’s Cuba, Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela, Daniel Ortega’s Nicaragua, and the other revolutionary forces “restructuring socialist societies” are the Communist paradises the United States needs to emulate in order to establish “social justice.” Writing in the November 1983 issue of Sojourners, Jacob Laksin notes, “Jim Wallis and Jim Rice drafted what would become the charter of leftist activists committed to the proliferation of Communist revolutions in Central America” (Laksin, “Sojourners: History, Activities and Agendas” in Discoverthenetworks.org., 2005).

While not technically violating the Monroe Doctrine the presence of an RU military mission in Nicaragua does violate the spirit of a basic US foreign policy. The US should lean heavily on Ortega to tell the Russians to depart. If they don’t want a US military advisory group and need one any state in the western hemisphere other than Cuba or Venezuela is fine. Ortega is just playing games to see if the US even cares about what goes on in his state. This is a big change from both Reagan and Bush administrations who effectively fought a real proxy war against communist insurgents in Salvador and the Sandanistas in Nicaragua. Few Americans realize today how large an effort this was. This is an interesting case to watch to see if the Biden administration is even remotely interested in purely US national interests.

I saw several bits in (real) news about US biolabs in Nicaragua.

Seems that bad elements in the US have been delving into bioweapons in labs in many countries.

Our government is now our enemy. Stolen elections has consequences.
