Same here. I’ve known a few. In some ways, they’re easier to be around than the general population (Non-Christians).
You so funny.
For many years my mom trained Down’s and other disabled young people to work in restaurants and other businesses. Most ended up living in group homes and when the worker misbehaved and needed correction the home would not allow him or her to go to work for a couple of days. They loved working so much that this discipline was always effective in correcting the improper behavior. Compare that to most able bodied people that see work itself as punishment.
At my local grocery store was a man, he had some sort of mental ability problem. He was a bagger in the checkout line. He did not work as fast as the other baggers. He was very careful in the manner he bagged and sorted the items. What I remember most about him was he always had a big smile for you and a hello. I did not mind at all the little extra time it took for him to do his job.
Your story made me cry. Thanks!
I really believe Dave Thomas is turning in his grave.
I am surprised HR stood by the firing.
It sounds like this was a one-off, not Wendy’s policy.
She probably wants to work.
Thanks for sharing!
I like your mom already, BTW. :)
We have a place in the KC area where the majority of the workers have down syndrome. The place is PACKED all the time. https://thegoldenscoop.org/
Mod Pizza hires people with disabilities and special needs. They also help get people off the street and help them live productive lives. Patronize them if you have one in your community.
I’ve never heard of Mod Pizza. I see there is one near my house. I’ll check them out.
“Try to load your own stuff and they’ll break your arm. And don’t even think about taking your cart back. Just good business.” Yup. And always smile and say hello, since people with D. syndrome are full of love and need full time care.
Read the full article in the Daily Mail, Mr. peek was offered his job back by the corporation that owns Wendy’s.
Mr. Peeks sister turned them down as she had already told her brother he was retired instead of FIRED, she said telling him they FIRED him would break his heart (my words, not hers).
Corporate said he would get his full retirement benefits,. his sister also demanded that they foot the bill for his RETIREMENT PARTY.
No word yet but I think they will agree.
She should have told her brother that the Wendy’s Manager just FIRED him, then SUED CORPOATE for about 10 MILLION DOLLARS.
And guess what, she would have won that law suit based on the FEDERAL ADA REGULATIONS!
Yes they do hire ex cons I have heard to give them a second chance. According to what I have read about the founders they want to help people and make a difference in the community.
“I am surprised HR stood by the firing.”
The HR manager was hired as and behaved as a rubber stamp for whatever the Israelis did. A very weak man with a rubber backbone.
“He may not really understand what retirement often means.”
I knew a guy who worked in the spare parts department of a company that I used to work for. He was just past the normal retirement age. There was a 10% RIF that he got caught in. The next day he showed up for work as if nothing happened. His manager had to sit him down and explain that he didn’t have a job there anymore.
As I side note, I later learned that he was a survivor of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis (CL/CA-35) in WWII.
“Try to load your own stuff and they’ll break your arm. And don’t even think about taking your cart back. Just good business.”
Somebody should tell King Soopers.
