A third of the German Panzerhaubitze 2000 howitzers used by the Ukrainian army are already in need of maintenance and are to be sent for repair in Slovakia, German newspaper Spiegel reports, citing its own sources.
According to the publication, from the very beginning, the Ukrainian military tried to fire special ammunition at too great a distance.

Even heard/read the same for the M777s and HIMARs.

Well, they are being USED!
If they sat in storage, nothing like that would happened.
The tubes wear out on all artillery pieces. These have all been being used for months now.
I read where firing 100 rounds per day was considered very high usage. The Ukes exceed that rate on a daily basis.

All military equipment requires constant maintenance. Something the Russians are apparently unfamiliar with.
Having actually been in the military I’m well acquainted with constantly maintaining weapons, vehicles, personal gear, and the like.

Exactly! The Ukrainian forces are making great use of the equipment.
What’s funny is that before the war the Russian army was considered ‘dangerous.’ It seems they are mostly dangerous to themselves, and without nuclear weapons is woefully incompetent.
Also tracked vehicles are very maintenance intensive. Wheeled vehicles are much easier to keep in service.

Gun tubes wear out. That’s what they do. And if you’ve got troops in contact and in dire straits, if you have to wear out gun tubes to keep them alive, you do it.
Especially if you’re the underdog in the fight. Because gun tubes don’t bleed, and they’re easier to replace than combat-experienced soldiers.

The vaunted PZH 2000 was never previously used in action, and certainly not in hard service in a real war. And, moreover, was never fielded in large numbers. Its never had a shakeout period.
It takes such experience to shake out all the bugs.

Russian gun tubes need frequent replacement IIRC.
They were not made for use in extended periods of high volumes of fire. They were designed for a high intensity campaign of a few weeks of battle in Germany. Not months of constant bombardment a la WWI.
They do (or did) have lots of replacement tubes in stock. Maybe much less so by now.
