About 3,000 of the approximately 18,000 Protestant pastors in Germany in the 1930s openly supported Adolf Hitler, and about the same number ended up opposing his tyrannical rule.
But it was the vast majority of ministers, about 12,000, who chose to remain silent – arguing it wasn't their place to engage in politics – who enabled the Nazis to "crush the heroic 3,000" who stood up against the dictator, points out Eric Metaxas in his new book "Letter to the American Church."
"That is the nightmare – that they thought it would be safe," Metaxas said in an interview with James Robison on the "LIFE Today" television program.

The naxis also put 10,000+ priests in concentration camps.
Churches became social clubs years ago.
With some being the exact opposite of their original purpose.
Sweeping assumption…….then and now
And Bonhoeffer isn’t our only lone example ( for then)
Really depends on denomination………
….and I believe Reformed’ denominations would not submit to rejecting God or ‘ go along to get along’
I spoke with a old friend recently about this and his line was "we need to be gentle with our homo-brothers and sisters." When I mentioned the takeover of leadership positions by LGBTQ's he said, "that's just a minor problem...blown out of proportion."
The problem is, in his eagerness to be kind, he is blind.
Exactly
Pride parades all over East Tennessee, and NOT A PEEP from local pastors. Meanwhile, they are mutilating children at Vanderbilt in Nashville.
They don’t want to say sayonara to their tax exempt status.
If the Church is not staunchly countercultural in the face of pervasive decadence, perversion and hedonism, it is morally bankrupt.
Bingo! (There ARE ‘non501c3’ churches out there...just look around.)
Churches are all political organizations now.
It depends on how it is positioned.
The “Reformed” Churches in Nazi Germany went along with the Nazis because
1. The Nazis said they were not up to the “latest in science” as the church initially rejected the racism/anti-semitism of Naziism
2. The Nazis built on the Prussian merging of the churches into a department of the state - they created “Aryan Christianity” which was basically Marcionism in which they argued that Jesus wasn’t a Jew but an Aryan (yeah, the Nazis smoked some serious sh!t)
The reason most pastors will not take a stand is that they will be out of a job if they do.
The congregation will not pay for sound teaching.
How often have you heard a pro marriage anti divorce sermon? An anti abortion one?
I have, and every single time a lot of women in the congregation get upset and force their husbands to leave.
Asking the American churches today to take a stand is somewhat like asking the German churches of the 1930s to take a stand. Be careful what you ask for. What side would the churches choose?
We have been indoctrinated to hate NAZIS. Projecting back and eastward, it’s tempting to think Germans in the 1930s felt the same way but remained silent.
How many Americans know that the name of Hitler’s party was the German National Socialist Workers’ Party? If you were to ask Americans what they think of Hitler’s socialist party, I think the most common response would be a blank look, sometimes followed by an argument. Many Americans, to include pastors, priests, rabbis, academics, and even members of the military, like the idea of socialism and are willing to give it (another) shot.
Correct.
The “dissenting” Lutheran churches were forced out of Germany well before WWI.
That is why my people went here. They had to deny the real presence or leave.
It is also fair to say we have an authority problem.
Metaxes was banned from YouTube because he wouldn’t compromise his Christian identity.
From their website:
At SafePlace, those who are struggling with the burden of same-sex attraction can find a confidential community to come alongside others who are walking the same path, share their burdens, and find freedom, power, and strength that only Jesus can provide. Whether you have been active in the homosexual lifestyle or are enduring the struggle of same-sex attraction, there is a place for you in Safe Place. [emphasis added]
In my estimate, it doesn't get much worse than that.
I didn’t know that. Wow!
Oh, I know it. And in a broader issue, if the church is not lowest-common-denominator non-offensive, they will not be "welcoming" to new customers.... I mean, members. Gotta pay that multi-million dollar mortgage on their "campus" after all.
Yawn - either too much or too little.
