The reality of legal weed in California: Huge illegal grows, violence, worker exploitation and deaths
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Oct. 3, 2022 | Paige St. John

At sunset from atop Haystack Butte, the desert floor below shimmers with a thousand lights

Illegal cannabis farms.

At this hour and distance, serene hues cloak the rugged enclave of Mount Shasta Vista, a tense collective of seasonal camps guarded by guns and dogs where the daily runs of water trucks are interrupted by police raids, armed robberies and, sometimes, death. So many hoop houses pack this valley near the Oregon border that last year it had the capacity to supply half of California’s entire legal cannabis market

Asia destroying California and the stupid California politicians won’t do anything about it. Hmong in Shasta County with illegal grows destroying the environment. Chinese buying residential houses in Sacramento for cannabis production. Goodbye sweet California

Bring back the Paraquat spraying!
Even the tax evasion is not getting Kali. motivated to shut this down.
Guess Nevada is lucky that there just is not enough uncontrolled water available for this be a big problem here.
Some of it still goes on, but nowhere near the same scale.

Imagine a state that made alcohol regulation so corrupt and taxation so high that moonshine became more popular than store bought booze. That is what California has managed to do with marijuana.

It is hilarious, the weed growers were all whining, they just want to pay their taxes to sell their drug. Now all of them are whining about regulation and taxation. They can’t compete against the illegal farms.

Whenever I post anti-legalized weed articles because of the overall harm to children, communities, environment etc. I get wild eyed people posting to me that I’m crazy, drank the koolaid etc. It’s like I ‘get’ to see the crazy eyes of addiction there. Best of luck to you on this important post.

Newsom just can’t destroy CA fast enough.

like everything it does, California didn’t really “legalize” or make anything “free-market.” It allowed some highly-regulated, highly-taxed actors to play in a government-constructed market. And then “progressive” California is surprised its not working as they planned

My other point is that progressives are like the mafia - they don’t care about vices, they only want a cut of the action.

So, not a damn word about the increase in psychosis with Marijuana legalization. Why do you think there was a big increase in homeless population when Colorado and California made it totally legal?

LOL

Have to say, saw this coming when weed was made ‘legal’

If untaxed booze id moonshine, what dos that make untaxed weed - greenshine?

From the article:

In one of the few federal cases that resulted in a conviction for illegal cultivation, probation officials recommended four years in prison for Aaron Li.

Li, who has a Ph.D. in vision science from the University of California, Berkeley, used money from unindicted conspirators in China to turn nine suburban homes in San Bernardino County into clandestine grow houses. Court records laid out the mechanics of a sophisticated scheme that ran until 2019, involving stolen electricity, straw buyers, fake leases, purloined passport information and money moved from China to shell companies in the U.S.

and the outcome

U.S. District Judge George Wu initially announced an eight-month sentence. After Li said that he had young children, the judge reduced it to six months.

“Marijuana is being cultivated legally — it’s just a question of getting the licenses,” Wu said during sentencing. “There’s so much of it. So why would I impose a lengthy sentence?”

Judge Wu not sentence Li to a prescribed longer sentence.
Don’t want to offend the Chinese overlords

Hey! We haven’t heard from the libertarians on this. You know, the ‘legalize drugs and it will decrease crime and open up rooms in jails and prisons’ people, get rid of the illegal drug trade. It would simultaneously reduce the amount of crime and raise the quality of law enforcement.

Why haven’t we heard from them on all this?

I know. Legalize all drugs. Right. Riiiiight.

Anyone who thinks pot is harmless is a fool! Kids start taking drugs looking for a dream but the drugs will destroy any dream they’ll ever have. George Soros funds the push to legalize pot in this country. Have you ever heard of or known of anything he’s ever done that was good for this country, let alone humanity? I didn’t think so.

From another article

In 2018, federal and state law enforcement agents seized about 100 Northern California houses that they alleged were bought with money wired to the United States by a Chinese-based crime organization, one of many such actions against alleged perpetrators of Asian descent.
