While I share your disdain for these types of articles there was an interesting point in the article that when they looked at equivalently trained high school records. White male students who did poorly on an introductory course went on to finish a STEM degree at a much higher rate than so called minorities. I believe twice as many (on a percentage wise basis).
The implication being that white males are somehow "encouraged" to push forward. While minorities are not.
