Nord Stream pipeline leaks spark sabotage fears
Axios ^

Posted on 09/27/2022 7:47:55 AM PDT by MNDude

Two undersea pipelines crucial to delivering Russian natural gas to Germany were hit with mysterious leaks on Thursday, prompting concerns of sabotage.

Why it matters: The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines have been central to the energy crisis that has enveloped Europe in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

While Nord Stream 2 hasn't entered commercial operation — its certification was halted on the eve of the invasion — Nord Stream 1 provided a crucial pathway for Russian gas to reach Europe until earlier this month, when Russia closed the pipeline citing maintenance concerns. The big picture: Two leaks were detected in the Nord Stream 1 pipeline and one in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. While neither pipe was operating at the time the leaks were discovered, both were filled with gas, Reuters reported.

Nord Stream AG confirmed in a statement that "the Nord Stream 1 control center registered a pressure drop on both strings of the gas pipeline," adding that an investigation is underway. Sweden's Maritime Authority issued a warning for ships to maintain a five nautical mile distance from the sites of the leaks, which were registered near the Danish island of Bornholm.

I meant Jake Sullivan, the NSA.

I am not surprised by any corruption reported about the House and Senate. It's an old-boys club and once you get in, they all scratch each other's backs and fund items from which they directly benefit.

Sometimes the corruption is just brazen, as when Reid and a partner bought land cheap in Nevada because Interior was blocking electric access for environmental reasons. Reid just changed the law to force Interior to grant access. Ch-Ching! Or the Dem Congressman from WV whose family owned resort property almost surrounded by National Forest. He appropriated money and directed Interior to condemn the remaining private land around his family's property. Ch-Ching!

A term limit amendment is one of the single most needed changes.

Wow. Did Biden actually follow through on a promise? That he promised this is probably the best evidence against one of our alphabet agencies doing it.

USA will deny it. Putin will deny it. Ukraine will deny it.

The masses will just believe whatever the voice of MSM tells them, which will most likely be that Putin did it.

The media campaign on this will be massive. All Russia would ever need to do to serve their purposes is to just not pump anything through it. Biden promised exactly this. Now, watch the media cover for him. Meanwhile, the nights are starting to get a little on the cool side in places like Germany. There will be no diplomatic solution to anything.

Trump promised, too. He sanctioned and tried to stop the pipeline. Brandon is weak and leading from behind. No way he did this.

This so obviously a typical KGB op. Cause a mess with deniability. Then tirelessly stir the pot and hope their opponent loses interest/surrenders. Putinists live for this stuff.

He drops the truth like he’s dropping a steaming deuce in his diaper - with no awareness that he did it.

“If Biden starts shipping gas to Europe...”

How would they do that? Freeze it and stick it in cargo containers?

Actually, we ARE shipping a lot of LNG to Europe, and it has driven up gas prices here. Adding up Euro reserves, available non-Russian imports, and (admittedly foolishly undeveloped) internal ongoing sources, data is incomplete but Germany looks to get by “uncomfortably.” I expect at least some rolling blackouts, but I can’t see any need for lengthy blackouts. As someone who was in the bullseye of the monster 2009 US MidSouth ice storm and the cold spell that followed (note that some people didn’t get power back for 3 full weeks, and ours was intermittent for most of that), I am pretty comfortable in predicting very few deaths in Germany if the power and gas grid is managed with even modest competence.

Of course, the German economy will certainly take a hit, but, even if their GDP drops by 10% for 2022, they are still hugely wealthy.

Riddle us this: Do you support the idea that US should have not bothered with direct energy sanctions (not that ours matter much compared to the Euros’) and instead should have gone on an urgent wartime footing to increase both national and global gas supply? Invest, say, the 1/2 trillion dollars likely to go into student loan relief?

We’ll see. LNG infrastructure is vulnerable to sabotage as well.

Looks like the Germans will need to get some electric space heaters and hope its a sunny and windy winter in the Fatherland this coming season.....

True, but EVERYBODY sane would conclude Russia did it, with those negatively affected out for blood. The Germans can’t do much in the short run (although I have some creative ideas), but in the longer term they could be very dangerous.

You did not answer my question.

You can see how much Russia craves a “super power” crisis with NATO. Losing to Ukrainian “khokhol” farmers is devastatingly traumatic for Russian supramacists.

Tinfoil theory: Radical Greenies, if they bought a modestly capable submersible to plant explosives. (It’s not “sane”, but those are the least sane group of all.)

Yes, but you still need a source to create the electricity. Germany already imports substantial electricity when solar and wind are weak during cold weather, and I don’t know if those suppliers have a lot more capacity to export in these circumstances. MAYBE France does from their nuke power plants?

A more scary image is of America voting for Biden(with all his scandalous bagage) over Trump. If you think the Germans were stupid, how much more unwise are Americans to vote for someone who destroys Americas energy industry(it won them WWII) and takes baths with pre-teen girls? The laughing Germans were smarter than the American voter. Good Grief!

>>Who sabotaged these pipelines deep underwater?<<

Don’t use big words like “sabotage”. The cause of damage can easily be determined. Is the damage internal or external? Is it a welding fault or is it corrosion? Whenever there is an unexpected interruption of operations, investigate what happened before finding a guilty party. Russia would like it to be sabotage — it would free them of ill will and incompetence. All that needs to be done is to launch a pig and find the break and photograph the break. Then analyze and publish findings. You don’t even need to send divers. All the technology is available to come up with a viable evaluation of the problem.

>>Breaking Update; Nord Stream 1 Pipeline from Russia Loses All Pressure<<

Can’t be true. If gas flow is through break, it will still have to overcome hydraulic pressure at seawater depth. If there is ZERO pressure, the break is probably on land from open pipe and someone could be stealing the gas in anticipation of winter. The pipe could also be floating
Mr. Putin, you have one f’n problem, but don’t blame me.
