Meta shuts down covert influence campaigns run from China and Russia

Facebook parent company Meta announced Tuesday it had detected and shut down two separate networks of fake accounts engaged in covert influence operations run from China and Russia.

Meta did not attribute either campaign to specific entities within China or Russia, or to the Chinese and Russian governments, instead saying only the accounts that were part of the campaigns were run out of the respective countries

MSM seems to have included this shut down in today’s talking points. here’s the headline of another piece published this morning:

“Meta disables Chinese, Russian propaganda networks aimed at US midterms, Ukraine invasion”

so, it looks like they are framing Meta as a white hat doing their part in preventing foreign influence on our mid terms.

Now they need to shut down the fake accounts engaged in covert influence operations run by the DNC, FBI, CIA, NSA, Media Matters, etc., etc. — not to mention META.

Meta must be awesome for detecting those “covert” accounts. Maybe they can give “Jake from the fbi” some help ferreting out those battalions of elusive ULTRA MEGA MAGA white suprema-cysts we keep getting lectured about.

If I was on social media (I’m not, unless you count FR), I’d photoshop up a new political meme and ask some friends to share it, just to see if it gets suppressed. I have must suspicions that it would.
