Danish authorities on Monday asked ships to steer clear of a five nautical mile radius off the island of Bornholm after a gas leak overnight from the defunct Russian-owned Nord Stream 2 pipeline drained into the Baltic Sea.
The German government said it was in contact with the Danish authorities and working with local law enforcement to find out what caused pressure in the pipeline to plummet suddenly.
On Monday evening, the operator of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which ran at reduced capacity since mid-June before stopping supplies altogether in August, also disclosed a pressure drop on both lines of the gas pipeline.
"The reasons are being investigated," Nord Stream AG said on its website.
The pipeline has been one of the flashpoints in an escalating energy war between Europe and Moscow since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February that has pummelled major Western economies and sent gas prices soaring.
"A leak today occurred on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the Danish area," said Denmark's energy agency in a statement.
The German network regulator president, Klaus Mueller, said on Twitter the pressure drop in both pipelines "underscores the German network regulator's assessment that the situation is tense."
The regulator said it was currently not known what had caused the pressure drop, adding the event had no impact on security of supply in Germany and that the country's gas storage levels were around 91%.
Nord Stream 2's operator said pressure in the pipeline, which had contained some gas sealed inside despite never becoming operational, dropped from 105 to 7 bars overnight.
NO CLARITY "Overnight the Nord Stream 2 landfall dispatcher registered a rapid gas pressure drop on Line A of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline," Nord Stream 2's operator said in a statement.
"Investigation is ongoing."

Just the Biden Administration carrying out Trump’s policy of ridding Europe from Russian energy.
Nice of Biden, but probably not appreciated by Europe.
22 Feb 2022 — Germany is halting the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline in light of Russia's incursion into Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.
“Except Germans are the ones that closed the pipeline.”
True, but I think the concern from Biden was that the Germans would be temped to open it, after the Ukraine crap is settled (which is probably sooner than later).
This assures that won’t happen and therefore you guys will be FORCED to buy our LNG at inflated prices. After all, President Biden did say he supported the energy industry during his campaign.
True, but I think...You are welcome.
Why do you care if Europeans were to buy U.S. gas at inflated prices. Isn’t that good for the U.S.?
“We’ll see. Boris Johnson was off to a “Damn good start” during his first few weeks in office, and we KNOW how he turned out.”
EXCELLENT for the US, and teaches Germany a lesson to NEVER go against Trump.
Germany's Olaf Scholz welcomes energy security deal in UAE
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has come to an agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over energy supplies. An agreement was made with UAE leaders in Abu Dhabi to buy liquified natural gas (LNG) from the Gulf state after Scholz and his delegation met with Emirati President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE state news agency WAM reported.
"I welcome the signing of the joint declaration" on the "energy security" agreement, WAM cited Scholz as saying.
The chancellor arrived in the UAE on Sunday after meeting with the Saudi crown prince on Saturday.
Earlier in the day, he emphasized the need to rely on a variety of sources for Germany's energy needs, saying that being dependent on just one source "will certainly not happen again."
I agree on the inflated LNG prices, but the Germans have several contracts going on (various stages), and it won’t be a USA-only situation.
I’m more likely to believe the ‘rush’ to conclude Nord Stream II...triggered sloppy work. No one, either from Germany or Russia, will have any eagerness to find the problem or solve. No pay-back on the pipe at present.
On the Nord Stream I? Anyone’s guess presently.
“I’m more likely to believe the ‘rush’ to conclude Nord Stream II.”
Actually, the reports are now that BOTH NordStreams were breached, so definitely sabotage, and definitely someone sending a message.
My hunch is that Germany did the math and were getting close to talking with Russia to see what it would take to get flow restarted...and some other party didn’t want that to happen.
No one from the coalition is talking much with the Russians except the Scholz-Putin discussions that come up about every six weeks. If anyone, it’s from the opposition party (AfD) that has chats with Moscow ‘players’. Between the reserve that Germany has, the ongoing contracts with Norway and a couple North Sea countries, and the LNG connection (UAE) starting in late December....they will get by without anymore Russian natural gas.
I would also offer that by early spring, whole attitude about anti-fracking and anti-nuke-energy in Germany will dissolve, with a bitter feud going on within the Green Party.
