Far-right leader Giorgia Meloni has won Italy's election, according to exit polls, and is on course to become the country's first female prime minister.
If they are confirmed, Ms Meloni will aim to form Italy's most right-wing government since World War Two.
That will alarm much of Europe as Italy is the EU's third-biggest economy.
She is predicted to win between 22-26% of the vote, says a Rai exit poll, ahead of her closest rival Enrico Letta from the centre left.
That dominance was underlined by the first projection from Rai, which gave her more than a quarter of the vote for the Senate. Projections are based on concrete results. Italians also vote for the lower house, the Chamber of Deputies.
Ms Meloni's right-wing alliance now looks to have control of both houses, with a projected 42.2% of the Senate vote.
Exit polls put the centre-left alliance well behind with 25.5%-29.5% and Democratic Party figure Debora Serracchiani said it was a sad evening for Italy. The right "has the majority in parliament, but not in the country", she insisted.
The left failed to form a viable challenge with other parties, after Italy's 18-month national unity government collapsed in July, and officials were downbeat even before the vote. The Five Star Movement under Giuseppe Conte is on course for third place but despite having several centre-left policies does not see eye to eye with Enrico Letta.
Turnout was dramatically low - 63.82% by the time polls closed - said Italy's interior ministry, almost 10 points down on 2018. Voting levels were especially poor in southern regions including Sicily.
The decision on who becomes Italy's next leader is up to the president, not Giorgia Meloni, and that will take time.

They gained control of both houses of parliament, and the prime minister will be the leader of the party that got the most votes. So they control both the legislature and the executive.
Let's hope they make better use of that power than our "stupid" party did.
The new PM... Giorgia Meloni
Is RINOism a thing in Italy?
It sounds like the Italians have finally gotten tired of being ruled by far left fascists.
I take it they are still counting the ballots.
Do they know they have to stop counting at 1AM, send everyone home, and then start adding massive votes to the side that will win a free and fair election.
Fantastic news! Maybe this world WILL right itself again? People world-WIDE have had MORE than enough!
Smart, Pretty and Conservative is always a great combination.
Good Luck & God Bless, Italy. Look out for those in your, ‘loyal opposition’ that have already stated that they are gunning for you!
La bella fortuna.
When it comes to the masses suspecting vote fraud, I bet Italy won't act the same as America.
If that scenario you mentioned happens, unlike America, Italy would really see an "armed insurrection".
Buyt I could have sworn only the west, the EU, etc, have elections that are 100% above board? /s.
In Italy, there is no early voting or mail-in voting. And absentee voting is very limited (handicapped, bed-ridden, etc). You have to show up on Election Day to vote and your voting card is stamped, so there is little room for fraud unlike our extremely flawed elections.
What, she plans to adhere to the Italian Constitution?
That really sets off the Left and the media, but then I
Anybody seen my cannoli?
Plus she doesn’t look bad in a string bikini.
Left, Center-Left vs Far Right...
GTH, Paul Kirby & the BBC — so many have had enough of your radical Leftwing agenda.
prove it ...
Giorgia Meloni is a solid rightwing politician.
Being against illegal immigration does not make her an extremist.
Fighting against illegal immigration shouldn’t even be politicized. It shouldn’t be a left or right issue. It’s just common sense policy that must be implemented by every political party in every nation.
She is pro free Ukraine by the way. She thinks nation’s borders must be respected.
Since Russia does not respect others borders, he is indirectly spitting on his own Russian borders. Thus, Putin is clearly not a nationalist. Instead he is a mainstream Russian equivalent of a neocon internationalist.
