Tesla's recall that wasn't—How Musk revolutionized the auto industry
Fortune via MSN ^ | September 23 2022 | Fortune

Elon Musk’s Tesla may have made electric vehicles popular, but the real revolution he brought to the industry is often—and unfairly—overlooked.

Normally, if the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) discovers a third of all the cars that an automaker has ever built has a flaw in it, that company would be face an enormous logistical challenge recalling all its products from the field.

Not so Tesla. At the push of a button, Musk can deploy a fix "over the air" to 1.1 million cars to ensure they all fully comply with NHTSA’s safety requirements.

“This is a tiny over-the-air software update,” Musk wrote on Thursday, following the mandatory fix imposed by NHTSA. When you can do that, the term "recall" doesn't really apply to fixing a car's design flaw, as that normally conveys literally bringing one's car to a mechanic for work.

That’s because Tesla designed its cars from the very beginning using a so-called “full stack” approach straight out of the tech industry. This consists of a base layer of code responsible for executing core functions, customer-facing applications that interact directly with the driver and middleware that sews the two ends together.

Collectively, they allow for every aspect of a car’s operation to be changed remotely, and more importantly without the need to alter any of its safety-relevant hardware.

But you can at least buy and cache gasoline and diesel for later use at a time and a place determined by you.

In fact, you could place “escape caches” of fuel to, say, escape from California.

OTOH, in a “California Standards EV,” they can literally stop you from escaping by disabling your EV remotely.

>>> “No escape without paying your overdue social justice property wealth taxes, comrade!” <<<

If you still want to get out, it won’t be in your Tesla. The state will own it after you hitchhike out. Or fly out, if they let you into the airport and let you use your CC.

A lot of hay, but slow and steady won the American continent.

OTOH, foraging horses, mules, donkeys and oxen fueled up along the way.

This is one of the reasons the South held out as long as it did during the CW. Confederate horses never ran out of fuel.

“A routine search of your credit card transactions reveals that you have donated money to a domestic terror organization, so we have remotely disabled your car. And your credit cards.”

And then you think: “But I never did that.”

And then they explain: “No, they weren’t designated terrorist organizations at the time, but they are now. You should have known better.”

...and ‘terrorist organizations’ are WHATEVER those in power claim them to be. Could be NRA and GOA soon...

“Very rare.”

Really?

Calling you out on that statement since it encompasses ALL lithium-battery EVs, not just Teslas.

Compare in terms of number of vehicles on the road at the time, number of fires and number of deaths between the ‘71 Ford Pinto, ‘73-87 Chevy full-size pickups and Teslas without using Tesla’s statistical manipulation of “number of incidents per miles travelled” (the presumed source of your biased statement).

Then we’ll chat about ‘rare’ assuming, of course, that you can find accurate statistics on EV fires in general.

Aside: It took until 1993 for the NHTSA to finally address the Chevy pickup hazard, a full 20 years since the launch of the saddle-fuel-tank C/K models.

Pro-EV bias among Conservatives - which directly supports the anti-carbon movement - really burns me...

Yup.

I am talking about Tesla. This thread is about Tesla.

You don’t know much about fishing, do you?

Then do it JUST FOR TESLA.

Waiting...

Not to worry!

Federal law requires automakers to warranty EV and hybrid batteries for at least eight years...

The Biden NHTSA employed some crazy, Tesla hating woman to be in charge the moment they seized power.
There is no unwillingness to go after Tesla. She has taken every chance to go after Tesla that she can.

I don't see any pro EV bias among conservatives. For the most part, most conservatives are agnostic.

I don’t disagree. My point is just that if we even have to think about these kinds of things we have a very, very big problem.

Many recalls are for mechanical failures. Those aren’t fixed by software

$20,000 batteries good for five tears. Wow!

Nope.

Under current estimates, most EV batteries will last somewhere between 10-20 years before they need to be replaced

How long do electric car batteries last?

I don’t know if you care, But I have watched the youtube video linked.

It’s by a car expert, who is closely aligned with Detroit’s automakers. So, he’s not unbiased.

I tell you this because there are two MAJOR errors on what this dude makes, and I can prove it.

1) Energy in a Gallon of Gas is NOT the same thing as Horsepower available to the vehicle over time. On a good day (economical car, driving highway), it might reach 30%. So for a fair comparison, replace that Gallon with 3 gallons.

2) The battery density he chose is literally 2 or 3 generations ago (more than 10 years ago). So, then the Number of soda cans shrink by 3x or so.

Now, you may doubt still. Let me PROVE it to you..

Say a car gets 20 MPG average (economical car). A 20 gallon tank will take you 400 Miles. Image 20 of those gallon jugs.

Next I pull up to it a Tesla Model S, which has a 405 mile range. Do you REALLY think you can fit 20x the number of Soda cans this dude shows in the battery compartment of the Model S?

The dimensions of the battery pack that gets 405 mile range are about 3 inches high (less than the soda can), and about 9 foot in length and 6 foot in width.

BUSTED!

If you don’t like electric cars, don’t buy one.

But I am here to tell you, we are on the cusp of being able to charge them to 90% in about the same time it takes to fill up a 25 gallon tank....without affecting the battery lifetime. Already we are at the density required (and that continues to improve). Once the # of cycles is over 3000, it’s a no-brainer - we are already close to that now.....There are batteries being developed that can easily do 10,000 cycles...

What does this mean? let’s take a look at your Gas engine. How many “cycles” i.e. full tanks can you run through? Let’s say it’s 800, and you get 400 Miles to a tank. That’s 320,000 miles, after which your engine probably needs to be replaced. Electric motors will go 1M miles, no issues, if not 5 or 10M.

With 10,000 cycles, if the pack gets 400 mile range that’s 4M miles.
