NASA’s $93B Artemis Moon Project Price Tag Is ‘Unsustainable’
Real Clear Policy ^ | September 21, 2022 | Adam Andrzejewski

While average Americans are excited the United States is planning to send people back to the moon through NASA’s Artemis project, the space agency’s inspector general said the cost is “unsustainable,” Fox News reported.

NASA Inspector General Paul K. Martin predicted that the first four missions will cost $4.1 billion each and told Congress that price "strikes us as unsustainable."

He projected that by 2025, NASA will have spent $93 billion on the Artemis lunar program.

The price tag is far more than the space agency’s lunar program was projected to cost a decade ago, CNBC reported.

In 2012, NASA officials estimated each mission would cost about $500 million, with the first rocket shooting off in 2017.

Now, the cost has increased eightfold, according to the NASA auditor.

Artemis I was originally scheduled to take off the last week of August but weather and hardware concerns postponed the launch.

NASA engineers had been unable to get the engines to the proper temperature range required to start them at liftoff, Fox News reported.

Launch controllers also had to deal with storms in the area that delayed propellant loading operations, as well as “a leak at the quick disconnect on the 8-inch line used to fill and drain core stage liquid hydrogen and a hydrogen leak from a valve used to vent the propellant from the core stage intertank,” Fox News reported.

Meet the Apollo lunar module and command module computer.

You may be in for quite the surprise:

“Was this neglect, incompetence, or sabotage?

How do we get out of this death spiral?”

There is an option four—and I know you do not even want to think about it.

But—you might want to consider it:

It was both neglect and sabotage, and it was committed in Congress, by democRATs, supported by Big Media race propaganda.

At least to do the same way we did then.

We shouldn't try to do it the same way we did in the 1960s. We have a different industrial base, and in spite of the jackasses in Congress, we've learned a lot about rocketry since then.

Back in 2013 or so, NASA had a team look into what it would take to build an F1 class engine using then current technology. The team studied the specs for the original F1, read the design documents, examined the blueprints, studied actual examples, and then set to work. They designed an engine they called F1-B, which would have been simpler to build, lighter, and higher in thrust than the original.

Congress killed it.

Instead, Congress mandated that NASA reuse Shuttle parts, rather than building something new. It would be cheaper, you see ... except that it isn't and no sane person would expect it to be. The result is this technological abortion called "SLS".

People are quick to blame NASA ... NASA only does what Congress mandates it to do. Blame Congress ... and the people who put congressthings in Congress.

“SO WHAT CHANGED? Just scratching my head.”

Look at those pictures again and you have your answer. Those people were IMMERSED in their work and didn’t have time to prevent the brainwashing of their kids, nor figure out just who the Democrats were and what they had planned.

...now those ‘kids’ run the country - and the Democrats got most of what they planned.

I know what it means, it means this crap is way over engineered.

And not just by a means of sending a signal, but everything. Heated steering wheels? Heated seats? Lane departure warnings?, speed-sensors for door locks?

It’s over engineered BS. That’s what I’m talking about.

Crew Dragon and Cargo Dragon were both built by a NASA contractor. All the various parts of Saturn V were also built by NASA contractors.

Bah! We’ve thrown away $50-60 billion in the Ukraine and spent untold billions on every program for the ‘disadvantaged’ and every vote buying scheme imaginable.

Whatever the problems, at least the cash is being spent right here in América and on a defined goal.

Don’t get me wrong, I watched the Apollo launches when I was growing up, I want us on the moon and Mars. I want us to stake our flag and claim to that as US territory. It is just sad to see the incompetence of NASA screwing it up so much.

We have already given roughly half that in money and military hardware to Ukraine, ‘unsustainable’ is relative to user.....

Since the perfunctory moon landings a half century ago, the mission of NASA has been keeping manned space flight confined to LEO.

Nationalizing planetary exploration and colonization is about as dumb as nationalizing anything else the market does better and cheaper.

We need to get the damn Yankee Federal government out of EVERYTHING except national defense, international trade and regulating true interstate commerce issues. NO damn Yankee Federal government in our health care, education, money and currency, and space activities not related to defense.

And when the Chinese land on the moon and claim it for themselves, what will you do then? The won’t share, especially with the US.

I’ve walked underneath that baby. Damn impressive.

Now...

Launch aborts due to FL weather this time of year are a given. SpaceX recently had a Falcon 9 aborted 4 times B4 they got it off.

A few new problems with a rehashed old system would not be surprising either. Liquid hydrogen IS tricky stuff to keep sealed up. But, this, given the cost overruns, and it is OLD tech, is getting ridiculous.

FedGov in 2022 has no idea how to do anything without it costing 5-10x what it should. Most state gov’s not much better.

There is no law in space, and no one can hear a Chinaman scream in a vacuum.

You are (deliberately I suspect) conflating “authorized” with “sent”. Not even $20 billion - a drop in the bucket in a modern major war - has actually been sent. This stuff is being slow-walked, slow-walked, slow-walked.

For example, it appears we’ve now sent a total of 20 HIMARS and a few other MLRS. And while very accurate and mobile, the HIMARS are high maintenance and have a lot of down time. The Poles know the score and are buying 500. F’ing Biden’s “support” is a weak stream pathetic joke.

Not confusing anything.

But yes, keep sending your $5, $10, $20, $25, $50 to them various Ukrainian NGOs cause they making a difference, as is all them billions of dollars sent, military hardware and munitions, and the ZelenskyyIdiot Regime demanding and begging for more and more and more.....
