The war exposed Ukraine to two of her most critical vulnerabilities – questionable legitimacy and extreme nationalism. Legitimacy derives from acceptance and recognition. However, Ukraine’s neighbors Russia, Poland, and Romania do not accept their current borders with Ukraine.

After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Ukraine got its borders within which she achieved independence and millions of Russians, Poles, Hungarians and Romanians were trapped in a newly created country.
The Ukrainian problem is greatly exacerbated by the fact that unlike pluralistic societies such as the USA, Canada, Switzerland, and Russia, which are tolerant of different cultures, religions, and languages, Ukraine is not. Unsurprisingly, devotion to pluralism proved not to be her forte. Even though the Kiev regime had no historical roots in the real estate it inhabited, it imposed Ukrainian rules and the Ukrainian language on non-Ukrainian people after declaring independence. It is worth pointing out that even in the Soviet Union, where Russian was the official language, the Ukrainian language and literature were compulsorily studied by everyone in Ukraine.

The territory of Ukraine is a mosaic of other people's lands. If we want to stop this insane war and ensure peace in Europe, instead of calling Russia’s sponsored referendum in Eastern Ukraine a sham, we should conduct an honest referendum in all the disputed territories under the auspices of the UN and let the people decide what government they want.

Thank you for writing that. Oil is irreplaceable. And like it or not, a lot of it is on Russian lands.
When you step back and see the global energy picture, you have to wonder - what were they thinking? That the world would stop buying Russian oil/gas/minerals?
To me, it’s becoming clear that they had no plan B. Either sanctions worked and Russia folded, or...?
Ukraine hasn’t been intact since the 2014 coup. It will become the incredible shrinking country.
Nope
“Russia will lose this vote...”
Russia has begun preparations for a referendum in occupied Luhansk, though there’s “no need for them because the occupation authorities may count however they like,” the region’s Ukrainian Governor Serhiy Haidai said in TV comments Thursday.
“The true referendum result is that more than 100,000 people have left the regional center” of Sievierodonetsk that was almost completely destroyed when Russian troops seized the city in June, he said.
“But there is “Georgia” where many Russians have fled to.”
With a population of 4 million and no-doubt a few words from Moscow, I doubt that all that many will wind up there...but some may.
“The USSR essentially got to keep the part of Poland it seized in its agreement with Hitler in ‘39.”
And I think Poland, in turn, got to keep part of Germany as some sort of compensation.
Poland had no say in her post-war borders.
Is going to die of blood, stomach or thyroid cancer? I thought he was already dead back in May and Russia was using a body double.
Putin's reign as President ends when he retires.
This insane propaganda is endangering our national security.
The regions voting in the referendum will become part of Russia. Once they are Russian territory, the Russians are going to take the gloves off. The only option at the point will be the total destruction of Ukraine and the NATO presence there or a surrender on Russia's terms.
“Russia has begun preparations for a referendum in occupied Luhansk, though there’s “no need for them because the occupation authorities may count however they like”
This war wouldn’t be happening now if the US was able to count votes properly.
As to Ukraine, I’m sure Russia would have welcomed the UN, or other disinterested observers...but they were boycotting, so I guess we’re stuck having to depend on the Russians to do the counting.
“more than 100,000 people have left the regional center” of Sievierodonetsk”
They can thank the Ukrainian government for wanting to fight to the last building there.
This developing strong alliance between Poland and Ukraine is Russia’s worst nightmare. Poland will strengthen Ukraine militarily and Ukraine will strengthen Poland economically. That’s makes them both in a better position to counter Russian supremacism.
European leaders are waking up to what a disaster a continued sanction war with Russia will be in the winter and beginning cave.
MAGA Republicans will win a large numbers and force Republicans to stop pouring money into Ukraine.
The whole war is winding down. It was disaster brought to us by the Biden regime and neocons. It's time both paid the price politically for it.
I do agree. And traditionally there was a lot of tension between Poles and Ukrainians, that is melting away.
Sure, Mom.
That shithole collapsed once and the world improved. It will collapse again. The West will be fine.
In a word: no. The population of the Donbas is overwhelmingly Russian speaking ethnically Russian and will vote to join Russia. They will no longer be part of Ukraine - like the Donbas wasn’t part of Ukraine before the Commies redrew the border to give the region to the Ukrainian SSR.
I didn’t think there were that many Poles, Hungarians and Romanians in Ukraine.
Stalin was pretty good at moving people around.
For example, Lemberg was 19.9% Ukrainian in 1900 and 88.1% in 2001. In 1900, Poles were 49.4% and they are 0.9% in 2001.
The Ukrainian population steadily increases after WW I, and the Polish, Jewish, and German populations are replaced by a small and now shrinking Russian population.

Great news. No need for Russia to nuke everybody then. Yet the Kremlin still does threaten nuclear holocaust. Why is that?
However it happened, it does look like Poland did acquire parts of eastern Germany after WWII.

Which were parts of Piast Poland, those lands had changed hands several times over history. Should have broken up Germany back to what it was before 1871.
