The war exposed Ukraine to two of her most critical vulnerabilities – questionable legitimacy and extreme nationalism. Legitimacy derives from acceptance and recognition. However, Ukraine’s neighbors Russia, Poland, and Romania do not accept their current borders with Ukraine.

After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Ukraine got its borders within which she achieved independence and millions of Russians, Poles, Hungarians and Romanians were trapped in a newly created country.
The Ukrainian problem is greatly exacerbated by the fact that unlike pluralistic societies such as the USA, Canada, Switzerland, and Russia, which are tolerant of different cultures, religions, and languages, Ukraine is not. Unsurprisingly, devotion to pluralism proved not to be her forte. Even though the Kiev regime had no historical roots in the real estate it inhabited, it imposed Ukrainian rules and the Ukrainian language on non-Ukrainian people after declaring independence. It is worth pointing out that even in the Soviet Union, where Russian was the official language, the Ukrainian language and literature were compulsorily studied by everyone in Ukraine.

The territory of Ukraine is a mosaic of other people's lands. If we want to stop this insane war and ensure peace in Europe, instead of calling Russia’s sponsored referendum in Eastern Ukraine a sham, we should conduct an honest referendum in all the disputed territories under the auspices of the UN and let the people decide what government they want.

Putin’s days are numbered. He cannot simply coerce the Russian population to supply the Russian Army in their roles as cannon fodder.

Oh, yeah? The Ukrainian constitution specifically addresses such referenda, and it says that ALL citizens of Ukraine have the right to vote in them, not just the residents of the territories involved. That was Ukraine’s position relative to the Minsk Agreements, but Russia screamed NYET!

The USSR essentially got to keep the part of Poland it seized in its agreement with Hitler in ‘39. And the USSR kept bits of Hungary and Romania since they were part of the Axis.
He isn’t going to coerce.
Ukraine, as we knew it, is gone. The only question remaining is whether the Neocons will succeed in bringing down the rest of the world with it.
Its already broken. The east and Crimea are never coming back. Russia will take Odessa and cut what’s left off from the sea.
NATO may ultimately have their “anschluss” with Ukraine, but it will be a dry, empty, rotted hulk.

Too bad the UN and NATO changed the rules over Kosovo, so now it’s just the people in the regions that want to separate.
But don’t worry, if the Russians are as HATED throughout Ukraine, as the Neocons claim, then Russia will lose this vote...

I think the Oligarchs are more likely to influence him. They're getting hit hard by the sanctions.
Unless you have a hard liner like Alexander Bortnikov who could take power. He might go all in. But he does not have the cult of personality like Putin so he would be easily overthrown.
I view all things through the prism of civilization’s lifeblood — oil.
Russia is destined for global dominance because of their surface area and the simple truth that their oil will run out last. Simply that. Battery tech has improved a factor of 2 or 3 from Lead Acid to Lithium Ion in terms of energy density, and that is the source of all thoughts of electric rivaling oil. It is improvement, but nowhere near the hype. Li Ion has energy density of about 2.5 megajoules per kilogram.

So what one hopes is happening is in the depths of the Administration, there exist some physics people who understand the above and maybe they have been successful in persuading the green folks in the Administration that oil is everything — and thus a decision was made to try to stop Russia now, before oil gets really truly scarce everywhere else. I don’t see it happening (re the Green ppl), but it would be the only justification for deciding a country thousands of miles away that has no US interests is a hill to die on.
In this context, first of all, Russia cannot allow NATO there. Look at a map. Volgograd less than 100 miles from the Donbas border. 1/2 of Russia oil production traverses pipelines and barges north along the Volga river, with Volgograd the chokepoint. NATO could never be allowed that close.
And so, the Donbas talk is not going to hold up. Ukraine can never sign any agreement to give all that up and therefore they will shell the area perpetually. Even if they had an agreement neither party can believe the other.
Putin is a multi decade statesman who is the least aggressive among all alternatives out of the various Russian parties who can get elected. You Have To Understand This — Rosneft has briefed everyone. They ALL understand Russia will be globally dominant. Putin is the most mild of all the alternatives, but he knows an attempt is being made to stop the inevitable by threatening the Caspian oil flow. He won’t allow it.
Any replacement for him there might be would be much worse.
Interest rates are spiking. Drilling is funded by loans. It is already shutting down. It’s not Biden regulations. It’s interest rates. Ukraine is not the place to try to fix this.

I voted for Trump twice because I was tired of our leaders prioritizing the controversies in distant lands over the troubles facing Americans here at home - inflation, run down roads, bridges and power grid, Social Security going broke, etc etc
I voted for making America great again , not Ukraine or Venezuala or Afghanistan
How ironic that so many “conservatives” are arm in arm with the Biden Administration and Liz Cheney when it comes to hating Russia and being obsessed about what happens in Ukraine.
If you care so much about Ukraine, if Ukraine keeps you up at night, why should I see you as any different than Biden, Pelosi, Cheney or McConnell? You certainly aren’t MAGA, you’re MUGA ( make Ukraine great again).
