A Tesla Megapack battery caught fire this morning at the local utility company PG&E’s Elkhorn Battery Storage facility in Monterey County, California, as reported by local news stations KSBW Action News 8 and KRON4.
Now there’s an alert from Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, North County Fire Protection District, and Pacific Gas & Electric issuing a shelter-in-place advisory for nearby areas, complete with an interactive map showing which areas are affected and road closures.
The fire started at around 1:30AM this morning, according to PG&E’s operations comm manager, Jeff Smith. Smith tells The Verge that PG&E is working with fire and emergency services to provide enough space to safely stop the spread of the fire. As of 1:55PM ET, it appears that the fire is still burning.

Here he is everyone. It took him to comment 38 to get on here. Must have been perusing the rest of Free Republic for other EV articles and to tell you all that you know nothing about EVs and Tesla.
Tesla will save the world.
I bet 95% of the Tesla car chargers still work though.
Have you ever been able to prove that any of those reports were false?
I thought it was Mother Jones?
Ive been to a fair amount of car fires, never saw one explode. Couple of pops from the tires, a few times, and an occasional pop from the gas tank, never an explosion.
Maybe a better design would be to install in open containment vessels that could be flooded
Exactly ... and Tesla will definitely learn from it and continuously improve its technology, as usual. Tesla and its sister company, SpaceX, constantly innovate and advance technology. That's why so many of the top engineers and scientists want to work there.
Whaaaahhhhh Whaaaahhhhh. WhaaaaAhhhhh whaaaaahhh
People dont worship Musk and EVs like me. Oh the horror
Post some pics about 1400hp EVs. Maybe that will change some minds.
“I thought it was Mother Jones?”
Amnesty International wrote the report. Mother Jones ran with it.
Like they lied about the Pinto dangers.
“Post some pics about 1400hp EVs. Maybe that will change some minds.”
Still ticked that the lowly Mach-E is quicker than your R and it has less hp!
OMG. OMG. OMG. OMG.
so the electricity that is produced by “green energy systems”, where does that go? In storage units? The same types of storage units, using the same materials in your toy cars?
Not one bit.
LOL!
“so the electricity that is produced by “green energy systems”, where does that go? “
ROTFLMAO!
You must be one of those that think those electrical outlets in the home are “magic”.
Hydro storage: Yes, of course. I have no idea the volume of water needed to supply a meaningful amount of hydro-generated electricity but it must be tremendous.
The detractors point out the acreage needed or the size of huge tanks. If dual-using the water for recreation, I would think the water would be drawn off just when people might want to be boating or some such. I suppose if the lake were huge enough, the siphoning would not be a drawback.

EVs are so popular, they need government subsidies.
And what do your photos show? Cars on fire.
How many care fires have you been up close to and watched the fireman walk up to them, crack the hood and put a hose under the hood?
Nope. I know my electric comes from a fossil fueled plant and and that EVs, climate change and all your EV nonsense won’t change a thing.
BTW, how much did that 1400hp mustang cost you? Curious
“And what do your photos show? Cars on fire.”
They sure don’t show firemen cracking the hood and sticking a hose under!
i was being sarcastic they happen in the movies*hollywood

one of the worst thing i witnessed in my life was just after a head on wrong way driver hit a pickup the pickup caught fire in seconds the driver tried to get out of the vehicle i could see him frantically trying the door and window, but couldnt due to damage and he burned alive..smell was terrible...I was too far away to help on an overpass, but called fire dept.
“BTW, how much did that 1400hp mustang cost you? Curious”
My Roush has only 750 hp. I think MSRP was $83k.
