A Tesla Megapack battery caught fire this morning at the local utility company PG&E’s Elkhorn Battery Storage facility in Monterey County, California, as reported by local news stations KSBW Action News 8 and KRON4.

Now there’s an alert from Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, North County Fire Protection District, and Pacific Gas & Electric issuing a shelter-in-place advisory for nearby areas, complete with an interactive map showing which areas are affected and road closures.

The fire started at around 1:30AM this morning, according to PG&E’s operations comm manager, Jeff Smith. Smith tells The Verge that PG&E is working with fire and emergency services to provide enough space to safely stop the spread of the fire. As of 1:55PM ET, it appears that the fire is still burning.

If they remain in power everyone suffers.

Everyone goes bankrupt and goes under. Then everyone starves. The left seriously wants to kill us all. Listen to what they say then you'll know where this is leading to.

Just to be clear. Is this a battery in one of their vehicles or a stand alone battery for storing electrical energy?

Like the brand of flashlight and toy batteries, these fires keep going and going and going.

The more energy you cram into chemical bonds, the more volatile the bonds. That’s not going to change. The batteries will always be a potential safety problem.

There was a story here a few weeks ago. People are paying higher premiums or flat out being cancelled for having panels on their roofs.

The “News” links are utterly useless.
All they care about is the effect on Hwy. 1 traffic.
No detail on the fire itself or when/how it will be put out.
I did find this, “The system includes 256 Tesla Megapack battery units on 33 concrete slabs”.
I could not determine how these are packaged, is it possible to quickly remove and isolate the burning unit, or is the fire going to spread to adjoining units?

One station is warning folk to close their windows and turn off their air circulation, how Green is that!

this will be an interesting test

how long will this fire burn?

how will they put it out?

did they prepare for a fire?

i think i read that the only way to put it out is to drown it

dont see how they can do that in this situation

I don’t think even submerging in water will extinguish a lithium battery fire. They provide their own energy.

Here's an idea. Tesla and SpaceX cooperate with their technologies.

Add a rocket pack underneath each unit. If the system detects a burning unit, ignite the rocket pack and steer the burning unit far out into the Pacific Ocean.

Some fire stations won’t put water on a battery car.

A smart engineer would provide a means to easily yank a burning unit from the bank of them.
I was unable to find any information on how smart the engineer was in this case.

From what I have read the answer is to throw the burning unit into a hole and cover it with dirt until it burns itself out in a few days.

Hydroelectric energy storage. Uses “green” or off-peak energy to pump water into a tank or reservoir. When needed, the water is released through hydroelectric turbines to generate electricity. Benefit: water very rarely explodes or catches fire.
