Pro-Kremlin separatist officials in Ukraine’s Kherson region announced on Tuesday they will hold a referendum this week to become part of Russia.
The leaders called on Moscow to endorse the referendum results immediately, according to Vladimir Saldo, the Russian-appointed leader of Kherson.
Saldo said in a Telegram post that he was hopeful Kherson would vote to be "a part of Russia, a fully-fledged subject of a united country.”
Russian news agencies stated that the referendum would occur between September 23 and 27, and would be similar to other votes in regions of Ukraine occupied by Russian troops, Reuters reported.

Ukraine is the size of Texas. The area reoccupied by Zelensy’s SS offensive is the size of Rhode Island. Also, why would Kiev even have an opinion on the Kherson referendum? The CIA, State department and pentagon control the country’s politics and foreign policy, not Ukraine. Ask them.
Russia is losing so they need more troops. They so badly miscalculated with regard to their own capabilities, Ukrainian capabilities and will, and the western international response.

What a mess and it increases the possibility of escalation beyond Ukraine.
Putin can not survive a defeat nor can he achieve victory with his present forces.
This is a very dangerous situation for Putin who controls the most nuclear weapons and the West seems eager to play “nuclear chicken” with a desperate corruptocrat who does not appear well.
The human cost of this is sickening and it’s a Pyrrhic victory at best.

Any state province or oblast can hold a referendum and succeed from a country and become its own country or join another country. That’s international law which is legally binding and it was created by the western nations. The “west” (i.e. CIA, Mi6, EU, WEF and State department) can scream and whine and not accept the results of a referendum but it’s an unintended “We the People” moment according to their own rules and they need to STFU.

One thing I get a chuckle out of here on FR with posters calling the referendums “fake” and implying that Russia will “manufacture” votes the way that democrats do here...:-)
These people in those Russian speaking areas “want out so bad they can taste it” and have been pressuring Russia to move quickly because that will provide permanent security for them.
It won’t be like Kharkov where Russia can just pull out if that suits them. Russia will be obligated to defend what will be their own territory.
A few weeks ago there was a funny video posted showing un unbelievable line of people trying to get into the Russian controlled part of Zaporozhye. They were stopped and questioned by Ukrainian security forces and kept saying they were just going there to pick up the parents, grandparents, whatever. But, their vehicles were piled high with their children, their pets and all of their belongings. It was so obvious that even the Western media who were there covering it were suggesting they were fleeing.
″(Russian President) Putin’s souring relationship with the military command and the Russian (MoD) may explain in part the Kremlin’s increasing focus on recruiting ill-prepared volunteers into ad-hoc irregular units rather than attempting to draw them into reserve or replacement pools for regular Russian combat units,” the ISW said.

Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War said the desire to hold a rapid referendum “suggests that Ukraine’s ongoing northern counter-offensive is panicking proxy forces and some Kremlin decision-makers.”
The ISW’s analysts said referenda would be “incoherent” as “Russian forces do not control all of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.”
“Partial annexation at this stage would ... place the Kremlin in the strange position of demanding that Ukrainian forces un-occupy ‘Russian’ territory, and the humiliating position of being unable to enforce that demand. It remains very unclear that Russian President Vladimir Putin would be willing to place himself in such a bind for the dubious benefit of making it easier to threaten NATO or Ukraine with escalation he remains highly unlikely to conduct at this stage,” they said.
