More than 140 people experiencing homelessness in Denver will each be provided up to $1,000 in cash a month for up to one year as part of a basic income program designed to help "lift individuals out of homelessness," the city announced last week.
The $2 million contract with the Denver Basic Income Project was approved by the City Council and will provide direct cash assistance to more than 140 women, transgender and gender non-conforming individuals, and families in shelters.
"Just as important as housing and shelter is a regular source of income for those experiencing homelessness," Mayor Michael B. Hancock said. "This direct cash assistance will help more than 140 women and families currently in shelters move into stable housing, and provide support, so they can stay housed while opening space in our shelters to serve more people."

Brother can you spare a dime?
I predict 140 poor souls about to overdose thanks to the extra drug money they were given.
Denver, two years ago was the first time I was ever flashed and saw a man take a dump near the overpass. There were pot stores everywhere, more ubiquitous than Starbucks.
This is a $1.6 Million government grant of your tax dollars going directly to drug dealers.
It's the hard stuff like crack and meth and heroin.

This program will NOT work and in a year there will be more ‘homeless’, more despair, more misery, and more crime.
There are solutions - this is NOT one of ‘em.

$12,000 X 140 == $1,660,000.
Where does the other $340,000 go to????
That wonโt even pay rent. Oh, wait, they get free rent too.

the idea of the UBI is that you get x dollars and no other supplements like food stamps and rent supplements.
I guess there is the idea that four or five people would band together to sustain each other. 5 people can make rent and food on 5000 per month if intelligent, prudent and careful.

Colorado Ping ( Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
Homelessness is a big industry. Billions spent to accomplish almost nothing for the people the money is suppose to help.
Down South when we have a hard freeze cops go out to look for the homeless to cajole them into homeless ‘shelters’. They’d rather live on the streets - or in this case, freeze to death on the streets. Does that make sense? It does if you know how the ‘non profit’ scams work.

Big industry, big money and really bad incentives.
And it's time for a MANDATORY school...use City Hall if you have to....
What are they going to do at the end of the $$$ after a year? Back on the streets again would be my bet.
I would be curious on a follow up showing incidence of drug overdoses among those receiving the windfall
It will just kill most of them.
