A powerful, historic storm continued battering a huge swath of the Western Alaska coastline on Saturday, with reports of flooding, wind damage and power outages.
The extent of flooding and damage wasn’t immediately clear but social media posts reported flooding in multiple communities.
As the system approached Alaska late Friday and into early Saturday, roaring south-to-southwesterly winds battered the state’s western coast. Through Saturday morning, widespread gusts had reached 45 to 77 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
In Hooper Bay, with a population of over 1,000 people, some families were reportedly evacuating and social media posts showed water reaching some dwellings and roads underwater.

The “angry sea” has been depicted in many a novel.

For reference, my village has an elevation of 26 feet above sea level.
The electric utility (AVEC) has fuel tanks tipping over in the wind, boats floating away, & evacuated relatives saying they had to wade through waist deep water. Cousins with water literally to doorsteps.
Hope that the damage isn't so bad that it can't be repaired before winter hits.
Yup, worst since 2011. Anything much before that is prehistory, don’t you know.
Not good news for the fishing fleets up there.
Empty fuel tanks would not be a good thing with winter just ahead. Have they gone green?
I suspect someone is going to be in trouble for a bad wind load design, construction and or inspection.

We were just in Denali National park, mt McKinley, Skagway, glacier bay, Juneau… 2 weeks ago. Looks like it’s nowhere near there.
Been looking at the cam every 1/2 hour or so since you posted it. Conditions look to be getting worse. I think some of the structures around the Visitor Center are starting to have some damage. They do not not look like they were built with a typhoon/hurricane in mind. The water coming out of the portals at the bottom of the Visitor Center is interesting.
You wouldn't want to place a wager on that, would you?
I've been watching these satellite storm posts and those big Slow Rollers coming out of Siberia ever since the first birds went into orbit.
Last couple of winters have been "funny"....aka milder than anything I've seen before.
This year....
This year looks like "Back to Winter" on steroids....and a full month early to boot. (Don't recall the early stuff coming in quite this far North, though.)
I'm a thousand miles inland (Montana) but I'm ordering extra fuel for the pellet stoves and wood burners.
Fasten down yo' hats. Winter's coming and it looks like it's going to be a b****.
If it were on the Eastern Alaskan coast that would be truly historic.
So how can they claim it's "historic"?
I’ve just begun gathering things for winter. Though apartment living I do use extra coverage over windows as wind hits there in winter pretty hard. The difference of using plastic covering stunned me and the windows aren’t old.
Additionally since slate kitchen floor I’m getting a piece of carpeting for it. Things like that do make a difference in comfort level.
