A stroll through the Civic Center or the Tenderloin or, well, any number of neighborhoods in San Francisco may tell a different story, but Mayor Gavin NewsomWednesday said his administration has moved 12,000 homeless people off the streets since he took office in 2004.
He referred to his predecessor, Willie Brown, and his famous claim that homelessness in San Francisco could never be solved.
"It can be solved for the people in the city," Newsom said.
The 12,000 number includes those helped by programs including Care Not Cash to slash welfare checks in exchange for housing and Homeward Bound to pay for people's bus tickets home.
Dariush Kayhan, director of homeless policy for the mayor, said roughly 7,000 people have found permanent supportive housing and of those, 90 percent are able to stay housed.
Paul Boden, director of the Western Regional Advocacy Project, laughed when he heard the 12,000 figure and said, "That's a lot of bus tickets." He referred to the program as "Greyhound therapy" and said it merely moves the problem around.
But Kayhan says that's not true. The city paid for bus tickets for 5,000 homeless people who have a receptive relative or friend at the other end to greet them.
