Over the roughly two decades that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been in power, he's dedicated a lot of time and money to building up and modernizing Russia's military. In the process, Putin garnered a reputation as a force to be reckoned with and was widely viewed as one of the most powerful leaders in the world.
But the war in Ukraine has decimated the Russian military that Putin spent years building, while raising questions about his grip on power, Russia experts and military analysts told Insider.
"Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been a strategic defeat. So far the Kremlin has not been able to achieve its strategic level objectives and it has incurred significant costs. Russia's military is going to have to be rebuilt," George Barros, a military analyst with the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), told Insider.
"The conventional ground army ground force that the Kremlin has spent the last two decades on creating — seeking to create a modern military — that force has been just largely degraded and in a large part destroyed in the past six months of war in Ukraine," Barros added. "It's very true to say that the conventional Russian ground force has taken a significant beating in Ukraine. It will have to be rebuilt."
Though it's difficult to confirm death tolls with the fighting ongoing, US military estimates last month put Russian casualties as high as 80,000. Among the dead have been senior officers, including generals.

Putin isn’t cornered and wounded though. He is reported to be in Uzbekistan. LOL
The Institute for Strategic Studies reports that the pre-war size of the Ukrainian military was 197,000 active duty, plus another 900,000 in reserve. Sending in only 180,000 troops vs. a potential mobilized force of 1,100,000 still looks like a very stupid idea to me. The Russians would be outnumbered even against the only the active duty Ukrainian forces.
I can’t wait to gloat at the Putin Puffers when this is done
If you had said the Ukrainian army and the Biden regime advising it, you would have been right.
Russia absolutely will control everything east of the Dnieper river and the entire Black Seas coastline by the time the war is over.

Just one of numerous outlets that reported on this
Unconfirmed leaked data from the Armed Forces of Ukraine General Staff:
- The AFU are only 43-48% complete;
- medical workers at the limit of their strength: the seriously wounded are transported to Europe;
- small arms and bulletproof vests are not enough;

This is backed up by other reports.
And Ukraine reportedly lost up to 12k soldiers in the last week taking an area the size of Rhode Island while Russia has taken more land recently in Southern Ukraine.
Ukraine has lost at least 50% of its regular, trained people, and had no choice but to go all-in on an offensive attack.

The Guardian, Democracy Now, and others reported that a mere 1,000 square kilometers were retaken by Ukraine, not Zel’s claimed 6000 sq km.
The BBC reported that about 1/5 of Ukraine has been conquered by Russia. So Ukrainians retaking 1k to 6k square kilometers of 1/5 of Ukraine turns out to be a paltry percentage (less than 1% to around 5% of what Russia has conquered) and especially paltry given that Russia has made recent advancements into areas of southern Ukraine.
Ukraine took back land the size of Rhode Island (as Russia took more land in the south) and Ukrainian leaders have said publicly they are “worried” if they can even keep it.

What Ukraine did was throw it’s most capable and well armed troops, that NATO had been preparing for months, into a small area of the front.
The Dive With Jackson Hinkle
Zelensky is hiding the truth in Ukraine
English-speaking NATO troops in Kharkiv?
The justification for this by neocons, if true, would be “Putin mean, Russia bad” akin to Clinton saying “Slobo mean, Serbia bad” or Obama saying “Gaddafi mean, Libya bad” to justify NATO involvement in those countries, which was against their defensive charter they attacking offensively and especially so since neither Serbia nor Libya attacked a NATO member.
Uh oh,
The rooskie defenders on FReep will start pounding their spoons on their little highchairs.
I would say that Putin has a big morale issue in his army.
“80,000 dead Russian soldiers? Highly doubtful. 🙄”
The article didn’t say that: It said “casualties.” Casualties include wounded and captured. But, I think you knew that.
I would say that Putin has a big morale issue in his army.
As our pro-Putin friends have said, don’t worry, Russia will soon be victorious in Ukraine. /s
“So population size equates military size? Putin according to reports only sent in 180k troops. Russia has a documented force of over 1.2 million troops. They apparently are really concerned.”
Just prior to the invasion, Russia’s total active duty military force was just over 1 million (1,013,000). That’s a for a country that covers eleven time zones. That’s a hell of a lot of territory to cover. 196,000, and 246,000 if constabulary forces are included. For the invasion, Russia also had the forces of the DPR and LPR, as well as Chechens and the Wagner Group. Thus, those forces must be added to the total of the 180,000 Russian troops involved in the invasion.
So, Russia’s invasion force was roughly equal to the entirety of the Ukrainian military.
A basic rule-of-thumb is that an invading force should be 3x the size of the defending force. Thus, Russia should have started its invasion with a combined minimum of 500,000 troops.
So, Russia’s invasion was imbecilic to begin with.
“Russia absolutely will control everything east of the Dnieper river and the entire Black Seas coastline by the time the war is over.”
Oh, we need to save this comment for posterity.
Utter balderdash
“Russia absolutely will control everything east of the Dnieper river and the entire Black Seas coastline by the time the war is over.”
Uh-oh. You called this a WAR, instead of the authorized term Special Military Operation. Your handlers won’t be happy with you; others who have made that “mistake” have been paid visits.

You are somewhat correct, although the Viking heritage of death as a victory (getting to drink with Odin) is a key part of the Viking psychology still evident in their descendants (The Ukes & the Rus)...
