The Ukrainian army’s counteroffensive around the city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine starting on Sept. 6 destroyed half of the best tank division in the best tank army in the Russian armed forces.
A hundred wrecked or captured tanks in a hundred furious hours. That’s how much destruction the Ukrainians inflicted on the Russian 4th Guards Tank Division, part of the elite 1st Guards Tank Army, the Russian army’s best armor formation.
Now the 1st GTA is retreating north in order to preserve what remains of its front-line divisions. But the damage the tank army has suffered could have lasting implications—and not just for Russia’s 200-day-old wider war in Ukraine.
The 1st GTA “had been one of the most prestigious of Russia’s armies, allocated for the defense of Moscow, and intended to lead counterattacks in the case of a war with NATO,” the U.K. Defense Ministry explained. “It will likely take years for Russia to rebuild this capability.”

Go Russkies!
Yeah, go home and don’t come back.
The Ukrainians should continue their march and head towards Moscow. It Russia can invade, then, the Ukrainians have the right to take over Russia. ;)
But, taking over Russia will not be possible until the Russia-friendly FR members say it’s okay.
Well, let’s see, we don’t get “The Truth” out of the FBI, the the DOJ, the CDC, the Defense Dept, the White House or our Supreme Court so why should any of us expect to get any truth out Ukrainian officials. Hell, they’ve had U.S. Advisors (paid by the U.S. Taxpayer) on the art of lying for years....literally.
Oh, they will.
If there’s one thing they excel at, it’s spamming this site with prolific propaganda.
That is why you are a troll, you are not keeping up with anything or paying attention to the war, but post nonsense, outdated stuff, unsourced and already discredited claims, “reports are” junk, things that people have already corrected you on and that were discarded days or weeks ago, repeat after repeat of posts of non-relevant things on threads, just anything that you think will get the reaction that you desire and disrupt or hijack a Freerepublic discussion.
And you jump on every thread to do that clown routine and do it a lot.
Yeah, pretty much. A tank can take a town, but a tank can't hold a town. They are pretty much screwed when they stop moving.
“I don’t think either side it telling the truth.”
At the least we simply don’t know.
It’s not Ukraine, but Ukraine+EU+America.
Tanks are far from obsolete, the Russians are using them foolishly. They’re sending tanks into battle for the wrong reasons (the primary function of a tank is to kill other tanks) and without adequate support.
The CIA turned Afghanistan into Russia’s Vietnam by giving Stinger anti-aircraft missiles to the Muj. When the Muj started using Stingers to shoot down Russian close air support, CAS refused to fly.
When CAS refused the fly, the tankers refused to leave the motor pool because they knew that without CAS they were sitting ducks. When the armor refused to support them, the infantry refused to leave settlements and built-up areas.
Which left the Russians in control of certain cities but unable to reinforce or resupply them because the Muj controlled the roads into and out of the country, and could threaten any particular airfield with Stinger.
These tankers obviously are too young to remember Afghanistan, else they’d be refusing to roll out of the motorpool, too.
Using tanks in isolation is a waste of manpower and hardware.
Still don’t give a rat’s behind.

But that's a pretty Big Biggie.
Patton playbook for forested/urban areas mandated aggressive infantry patrolling in advance of tanks. Not a fun job but necessary.
GOOD!
RUSSIAN SCUM!
KILL ‘EM ALL!
“...but how sustainable would up to 12k Ukrainian soldiers dead be to retake an area no bigger than Rhode Island?”
Note that I am NOT saying that I believe the Ukrainians OR the Russians; my point is that land captured is not the be all and end all of determining the success (or lack thereof) of a combat operation.
—”People fighting an existential threat to their homeland, versus a much more heavily armed but poorly led and poorly trained larger military oppomemt.”
... with troop morale “IN THE TOILET” and flushed in a route.
Notice in many photos of captured Russians’ hands tied with a cell phone next to them.
The faster-running Russians will be spreading the word like never before.
‘Russia’ Review: A Nation Prone to Cruelty (From WSJ)
If the American Civil War ended slavery, and the English Civil War restrained the monarchy, what did the Russian Civil War achieve?...
... “Whole worlds were shaking and falling to the ground.”
The collapse of those worlds spawned a tragedy of epochal proportions. What ought the world expect after Putin’s Russia finally comes crashing down?
