The Ukrainian army’s offensive continues, and the Russian army’s defeat or “regrouping” in Kharkiv is having an impact across the board. Now, no one knows where the Ukrainian army’s counter-offensive will stop.
With the loss of strategic locations such as Izum, the Russian army is considered to be likely to abandon the entire Kharkov. Of course, even so, I think it will be difficult to hold back. Many of the Russian troops attacked by the Ukrainian army, whether they were regular Russian troops, Donbas militia or Chechen troops, were on the verge of collapse and fled. Some analysts believe that the performance of the Russian army was not even as good as that of the former Afghan government.

Russian intelligence shows that the Ukrainian army is gathering in Uglidar, ready to make another big move to cut off the connection between Donetsk and Mariupol, and cut off the Russian army front. As for what will happen, it is not easy for us to make predictions. Let’s continue to observe and see how much the Ukrainian counterattack can achieve.

And Ukraine reportedly lost 12k in the last week taking an area the size of Rhode Island while Russia has taken more land recently in Southern Ukraine.
Ukraine has lost at least 50% of its regular, trained soldiers, and had no choice but to be involved in an all-in on an offensive attack recently.

The justification for this by neocons, if true, would be “Putin mean, Russia bad” akin to Clinton saying “Slobo mean, Serbia bad” or Obama saying “Gaddafi mean, Libya bad” to justify NATO involvement in those countries, which was against their defensive charter they attacking offensively and especially so since neither Serbia nor Libya attacked a NATO member.

This was not an operational trap by Russia, but neither was it a victory in battle for Ukraine - for the simple reason that there was not much of a battle at all. Russia had already hollowed out these positions, and withdrew the remaining screening forces very quickly. Ukraine covered a lot of ground, but were unable to destroy any Russian units, because there really weren’t any there.
It would be silly to try to talk the Ukrainian side out of their excitement right now. Credit where credit is due, they did manage to put together a good sized shock group, aim it at a weak portion of the front, and regain a good bit of ground. Considering the abject lack of successes for Ukraine in this war, they are rightfully trying to eke every last bit of morale and propaganda out of this.
I do not, however, believe that the territorial losses in Kharkov in any way change the ultimate calculus of the war. Russia hollowed out this front and surrendered ground, but they were able to maul the Ukrainian forces as they advanced with relentless artillery and airstrikes. Ukrainian channels widely report overflowing hospitals. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed 4,000 killed and 8,000 wounded for Ukraine during their advance - I believe this is high, but even if we reduce the numbers by 50% (leaving us with 6,000 total casualties, reasonable given how much ordnance Russia discharged) it is very clear that the loss ratios in this operation were stacked badly against Ukraine, as they always are.

In WWII, the loss of skilled, experienced military men resulted in the turning of the tide in the air forces of both Germany and Japan. Planes were replaced far quicker than pilots who could make good use of them. The same went for Kraut tank commanders.
I wonder if that is the case with the Ukraine/Russian military in this conflict, and does the phenomenon extend to the infantry? They can replace tanks, missiles, drones, and artillery, but how quickly can they replace their casualties with effective fighters?
It would be nice to have unbiased information, but I guess we’ll have to wait a few years for that.

All have fallen for the believe that the Ukrainian rapid advance has caused a Russian defeat. That however is not the case.
The main Russian forces had already left the area. What was left were sentry guards of the Luhansk People's Republic and a few companies of the Russian National Guard which is more or less a police force. That is why the 'western' official talking with Reuters is quite cautious with his assessment:
"There's an ongoing debate about the nature of the Russian drawdown, however it's likely that in strict military terms, this was a withdrawal, ordered and sanctioned by the general staff, rather than an outright collapse."

"Obviously, it looks really dramatic. It's a vast area of land. But we have to factor in the Russians have made some good decisions in terms of shortening their lines and making them more defensible, and sacrificing territory in order to do so," the official said, adding he did not expect Russia to immediately seek to regain lost territory.
The main Russian reason for holding onto Izium southeast of Kharkov was to use it as a springboard to attack Sloviansk and Kramatorsk along the M-03 highway. However over the last months several Russian attempts to cross the Siverski Donets river south and east of Izium and to establish a bridgehead on the southern side had failed.
The Ukrainians were well established in the 'Sherwood Forest' on the southern side and had defeated all attempts to push a larger Russian forces into the area. (According to Yves Smith Alexander Mercouris had made that point and predicted a Russian withdrawal from Izium in one of his shows before the Kharkov 'counteroffensive' started.) I myself had missed that point.
The region, which is sparsely populated (Izium had a pre-war population of some 40,000), has little additional value. Russian forces that had been there shortly after the war began had been pulled out over time to rotate into other areas.
According Colonel Markus Reisner from the Austrian military the Ukraine used six full brigades (vid) in its attack. If Russian Defense Ministry numbers are halfway right the Ukrainian forces lost some 4,000+ soldiers, nearly two brigades, in the attack. These were troops that ran into areas that the Russian artillery had pre-registered. They received barrage after barrage and were destroyed.
The Russian air force caused additional damage. Hundreds of tanks and armored vehicles the 'west' had delivered to Ukraine were destroyed. Talk of large Russian material losses and of thousands of Russians taken prisoners of war are nonsense.

What is the truth here? Only time will tell.
It would be cheaper and more efficient if the Ukrainians offered the demoralized Russians a cash bounty to surrender intact armored vehicles and tanks.

Third, it exaggerates the area taken by Ukraine recently as reports by The Guardian, Democracy Now, and others say Ukraine only took 1,000 sq km, not 6k, claimed by Zel.
Try using other propaganda next time.

The Guardian, Democracy Now, and others reported yesterday that 1,000 square kilometers were retaken by Ukraine, not Zel’s claimed 6000 sq km.
The BBC reported today and yesterday that about 1/5 of Ukraine has been conquered by Russia.
So retaking 1k to 6k square kilometers of 1/5 of Ukraine turns out to be a paltry percentage (less than 1% to around 5% of what Russia has conquered) and especially paltry given that Russia has made recent advancements into other areas of southern Ukraine.
The Ukrainian army has already said publicly they are worried” about defending it.
And reports are up to 12k Ukrainian casualties taking an area no bigger than Rhode Island.
