The strategy behind Ukraine’s rapid military gains in recent days began to take shape months ago during a series of intense conversations between Ukrainian and U.S. officials about the way forward in the war against Russia, according to American officials.
The counteroffensive — revised this summer from its original form after urgent discussions between senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials — has succeeded beyond most predictions. Ukrainian forces have devastated Russian command and control, and appear poised to capitalize on their advances in the northeast of the country and in another campaign in the south.

The last proxy war we fought with the “Russians” was in Vietnam.
Have we learned nothing?
Fingers crossed for success!
Perhaps, but it’s a specious analogy as Russia is vastly different country then the Soviet Union was in 1966.
Absolutely!
“The last proxy war we fought with the “Russians” was in Vietnam.”
It was a proxy for Russia, but initially not for us: We were very much intimately involved, and we did not have someone else do the fighting for us, at least up until 1973. After that, from 1973 to 1975, it was a proxy war for us, as well; but only in a half-hearted sense, which soon became no heart at all when Congress cut off funding and support for the RVN, leaving them alone and fully exposed.
If this proxy war is like Vietnam, I can’t wait for the Democrats to stab us in the back again.
You could say even though we didn't have boots on the ground there, Afghanistan was the last "proxy" war with the Soviets. And look what we got from it, Osama bin Laden.
FVP! Loser and chump needs to die or get deposed by his fellow Kremlin backstabbers. By this March, Putin will be out. Dead or deposed.
The counter offensive may have been successful. I note that this is a Times article presenting the administration spin that it is the father of this particular success as in success has a thousand fathers. They even try to rehabilitate disgraced incompetent thoroughly modern Milley as a linchpin holding it all together. Can we impute from this that the administration had nothing to do with the orphan of defeat when Ukraine was getting run over in the East for the last 5 months?
Russians and Chinese. This time however, the Ukes know how to fight unlike the ARVN. You won’t find the slogan “want to buy some rifles cheap? Never used and only dropped once!”.
I have a hard time believing anything that the NYT is reporting because they are tools of the State. The globalist want war in Ukraine so in reality, none of us really have a clue as to what I s really going on.
My question is who is there to replace Putin? Russian politics has always revolved around a "king" figure.
Democrats pretty much lost interest in Ukraine and European security once Putin started shooting in 2014. They lifted Trump’s sanctions. They have never been interested in countering Russia’s corruption and influence in Europe. It’s was Trump who drove home those points in his famous speech in Poland. If this is a hot proxy war now it is because Putin has made it one.
Yep, my immediate thought too.
Most amazing to me is how the eneMedia, not just the Slimes, has infiltrated FR. It’s now ubiquitous, that MSM reports of Uke “success” is quick to be reported here and touted up the flagpole.
Count me out to salute that flag.
We apparently learned that in a proxy war, it is much better when the other side is using its own troops, and you are generally just supplying/supporting the forces on the other side. That seemed to work out well for Russia in vietnam, just as it seems to be working out well for us in Ukraine.
Perhaps, but it’s a specious analogy as Ukraine is vastly different country than the Vietnam was in 1966.
As Ukrainians have said, they will fight to the last man for themselves, not for the US. And the’ve seen what rule by Russia looks like.
The South Vietnamese were doing most of the fighting and dying throughout. They held most of the ground and faced most of the enemy.
Russians knew of the Ukrainian buildup in the northeast and did not react. Lack of Russian forces.

Interestingly, a number of Russian Telegram channels have been talking about a Ukrainian buildup in Kharkiv over the past month, but it appears Ukraine may still have achieved surprise today.

The reporting also indicates that Kherson is not a feint nor was it designed to draw Russian forces away from Kharkiv. Ukraine is trying to achieve gains in both areas, but Russia didn't have the forces to defend both regions.
