ROBIN WILLIAMS: HUMAN BEING
In January 1997, my family and I PCSed from Camp Lejeune to Okinawa. On the trip from the east coast to LA where we would board the Freedom Bird, we decided to take a few days for sightseeing in San Francisco. We stayed at the BOQ on Naval Station, Treasure Island. One night my wife sent me to the convenience store for some milk. On the way I saw one of the old boat hangars lit up. There was a beehive of activity around the huge building, with cars and people coming and going from the parking lot.
I approached the security guard and asked what was going on. He explained that Treasure Island was being turned over by the government and that Hollywood studios were now using the old hangars to make movies. Fascinated by this discovery, I asked what movie was being made in that hangar. He said it was a film called Flubber starring Robin Williams. Robin Williams is my favorite and I asked if I could go inside. "No!" he firmly said. The guard and I continued to talk and he mentioned he was from the Bronx. What a coincidence, so am I! I then asked once again if I could go in and he said ''Well, I guess it's ok, but don't touch any equipment". Stepping inside the studio was like Alice going through the looking glass...people running around, actors, cables, lights, sets, props all over the place. I then watched the basketball scene as it was being filmed and I could see Robin Williams at the other end of the sound stage. I hurried to the BOQ and told my wife what happened, to which she said, "sure...!" "Put your coat on, dear, we're going back." In a few minutes we were watching the filming with our 16 month old daughter. In about a half hour, the day's filming ended, and Robin Williams began to leave the set. He walked in our direction, closer, closer, closer, then right next to us! My wife ran up to him with our daughter and asked for this autograph. Robin Williams bent down, lifted up our daughter and started making funny faces and voices to entertain her. Many of these voices were recognizable from Good Morning Vietnam and Mrs. Doubtfire! He asked who we were and we explained we were in the military headed to duty in Okinawa. He said how much he admired people serving in the military, gave us his autograph, and wished us well. I reflected on that thrilling encounter many times since that night in Treasure Island. Here was a major star, an Academy Award winner. He could have just walked by and not want to be bothered. Yet, he took time out to make total strangers feel important. What a splendid example of human decency, humility and concern for others. What a marvelous example for us all...to love our neighbor as we love ourselves! Chaplain Mitch Schranz

Compassion Over Bitterness
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger. Ephesians 4:31
When the World Trade Center towers fell on September 11, 2001, Greg Rodriguez was one of the victims who died in the wreckage. As his mother, Phyllis, and his father grieved, they also carefully considered their response to such a horrific attack. In 2002, Phyllis met Aicha el-Wafi, the mother of one of the men accused of helping the terrorists. Phyllis said she “approached her and opened my arms. We embraced and cried. . . . For Aicha and me, there was an immediate bonding. . . . We both suffered on account of our sons.”
Phyllis met Aicha amid shared pain and sorrow. Phyllis believed that fury over her son’s death, appropriate as it was, could not heal her anguish. Listening to Aicha’s family story, Phyllis felt compassion, resisting the temptation to view them merely as enemies. She desired justice, but believed we must release the temptation to seek revenge that often grips us when we’ve been wronged.
The apostle Paul shared this conviction, admonishing us to “get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger . . . along with every form of malice” (Ephesians 4:31). As we relinquish these destructive powers, God’s Spirit fills us with new perspective. “Be kind and compassionate to one another,” Paul says (v. 32). It’s possible to work for wrongs to be made right while also refusing rageful vengeance. May the Spirit help us show compassion that overcomes bitterness. — Winn Collier
Where have you been held captive by bitterness, rage, or anger? How can God help you live out compassion rather than vengeance?
Dear God, there’s so much wrong in the world. Please help me be filled with compassion instead of bitterness.

Robin Williams was great to the troops. Kind of a modern day Bob Hope.
I got to see Robin at Victory Base in Baghdad in late 2004, shortly before I came home for R&R.
It was a great, uplifting show with lots of laughs.

Greetings to all at the Canteen!
To all our military men and women, past and present,
THANK YOU
for your service!

Tennessee Crossroads is a TV show that shows different places of interest around the state, four episodes in a half hour. This week, they FINALLY showed their episode on the Werner Military Museum in Monteagle where I so happily volunteer each weekend. It's only 6 and a half minutes long but they did a fair job with it. You can watch it here.

Dear God: I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman, Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine feel alone or forgotten.
O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is loving kindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.

For such a spectacular mind to be destroyed by Lewy body dementia just seems profoundly wrong.

Howdy, Kathy.
We were wondering if they’d ever show us. They were there in MARCH. But they had a LOT of work to do to cut it down to those few minutes since they were there almost three hours. More than once, they commented on it being much more than they’d expected. They were probably already dreading the time spent in the editing room. LOL
It looks like winter is already thinking about y’all up there. I was shocked to see snow on the mountains yesterday afternoon!
