Why monarchy-rejecting America mourns Queen Elizabeth, too
NY Post ^ | 8 Sep 2022 | Philip Terzian

So what can explain the depth of feeling, the palpable sense of loss and regret, in this superpower ex-British colony across the Atlantic at the death of Queen Elizabeth II?

Familiarity has something to do with it. Like most Britons, the great majority of Americans have never known any other British monarch; Elizabeth had met on equal footing with every president since Harry Truman.

Fame, and its cousin celebrity, is a factor as well: Her birth was news during the Coolidge administration; and when, in the middle of the Great Depression, her uncle King Edward VIII abdicated to marry an American, 10-year-old Princess Elizabeth suddenly found herself heir to the throne of the British Empire.

Mention “the British Empire” today and historical arguments ensue. Mention “the queen” and everybody over here knows who you mean.

Chuck and Joe know nothing about duty. They know craven politics and self promotion. They sought the limelight, she had it thrust upon her.

The Queen just was, through thick and thin. She had a wry sense of humor as well. I admire her sense of duty to the end but not only that, she chose where she wanted to spend her last days. She was the most public person but still found a way to live privately and enjoy the outdoors.

In my opinion, she should’ve kept Hong Kong.

She was understated and dignified. She found a way to keep the monarchy relevant through an era of changes, challenges and modernity.

Can Charles and, assuming the monarchy survives, William do the same?

The queen’s passing reminds us how much of the world was once British. 60, 70, 80 years ago, you couldn’t go to Canada without being reminded that it was part of the British Empire (technically Commonwealth, but whatever). Now it takes something like this to remind you.

“The Queen would always stop and say hello … it was clear from the moment we first stopped they hadn’t recognized [her],” he told Sky News.“

Damn.

“I don’t know how in the world they managed to keep a straight face the whole time”

That level of sheer ignorance may be appalling enough to tamp down the funny in that situation.

I heard the man tell that on TV the other day.

She seems to have been a funny, delightful person in private life. She may have taken her role very seriously, but I don’t think she took herself seriously at all.

Everyone secretly knows deep down that monarchy is the natural order of things. ;-)
