WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has temporarily blocked a court order that would have forced Yeshiva University to recognize an LGBTQ group as an official campus club.
The court acted Friday in a brief order signed by Justice Sonia Sotomayor that indicated the court would have more to say on the topic at some point.
The university, an Orthodox Jewish institution in New York, argued that granting recognition to the group, the YU Pride Alliance, “would violate its sincere religious beliefs.”
On the other side, the club said Yeshiva already has recognized a gay pride club at its law school.
A New York state court sided with the student group and ordered the university to recognize the club immediately. The matter is on appeal in the state court system, but judges there refused to put the order on hold in the meantime.

I Had a friend more the 20 years ago who graduated first in his class from YU, after he decided being Christian rather than Jewish made more sense.
He is from one of THOSE families.
His father was a jeweler to the stars of Hollywood, his older brother owned a large art gallery on Union Square in San Francisco, his older sister was a doctor, younger brother wrote software for the Hollywood studios and his younger sister was a wardrobe mistress for a Hollywood studio. My friend was the designated rabbi.
He grew up in a house owned by a certain major female folk singer, and promised to marry a well-known Hollywood starlet when they were nine.

Hoping it blossoms into a full final ruling that religious organizations do not have to submit to force or threats or extortion to “accept” or “endorse” immoral teachings or organizations. Someone posted here on this story a couple of days ago and said Yeshiva established itself as a secular university rather than a religious school for some kind of legal or financial reasons. I suspect that’s going to be a major factor in how this case plays out.
If queers insist upon attending Yeshiva University, they can start their clubs or societies off campus.
