China unveils major plans to build underground Moon base inside ancient lava caves

CHINESE space designers have unveiled plans to build their proposed lunar bases in the volcanic caves of the Moon, allowing for longer-term stays.

The researchers believe that these underground hollow lava channels would offer astronauts offer a natural shield against space radiation and the extreme temperatures prevalent on the Moon. This would provide a boost to Beijing’s plans to allow astronauts to stay on the Moon for long periods by 2035. The underground tunnels, also known as lava tubes, were created by molten rock during ancient volcanic eruptions.

I know they claim the moon had volcanic activity at one time, (within 100 million years, per wiki) but isn’t it too small to have a molten core? Do any other moons have volcanoes?

I only pretend to know, but I don’t think size is as important as energy input. The Earth’s moon has been locked facing it for a long time. No more tidal energy kneeding its core. The moon, Io, orbiting Jupiter has active volcanoes, now. It is practically being torn apart by energy input from Jupiter.

Hopefully, the Moon is pretty solid. I think that would lead to far more interesting projects.

Seems really smart to screw with the moon which affects our gravity, tides, animal behaviors, etc.

Maybe they can alter it's orbit until it crashes into Earth.

They haven’t landed a single person on the moon yet but hey they have BIG plans to build a colony on the moon which won’t be self sufficient, requiring constant resupply from Earth and be of limited value if it’s established.
I’m a big fan of sci fi but the reality is that a moon base of any real size is still a hundred years or more away (if ever). Keep dreaming China it’s what your good at.
