A girl wanted to keep the goat she raised for a county fair. They chose to kill it
The Guardian ^ | September 2, 2022 | Dani Anguiano

A California lawsuit brought by the girl’s parents accuses law enforcement of traveling hundreds of miles to confiscate a beloved pet.

When a young California girl purchased a baby goat last spring, the intention was to eventually sell it at a county fair livestock auction. But after feeding and caring for the animal for months, she bonded with the goat, named Cedar, and wanted to keep it.

Jessica Long sued the Shasta county sheriff’s department seeking damages and accusing the agency of violating her daughter’s constitutional rights and wasting police resources by getting involved in a dispute between her family and a local fair association.

In July, “two sheriff’s deputies left their jurisdiction in Shasta county, drove over 500 miles at taxpayer expense, and crossed approximately six separate county lines, all to confiscate a young girl’s beloved pet goat”, the lawsuit states. “As a result, the young girl who raised Cedar lost him, and Cedar lost his life.”

Instead, law enforcement officers allegedly travelled hundreds of miles to confiscate the pet, who was eventually slaughtered.

The story is laid out in a lawsuit, first reported by the Sacramento Bee, filed by the child’s parent this week, in a case that has sparked outrage and criticism that the police and the county fair went too far to reclaim the goat and send a child’s beloved pet to slaughter.

Goat meat can be preapred to be very tasty!

I like South Asian or Caribbean-style goat curry.

That is what I would have done-a lesson in reality-but if the kid is that inclined to get attached to goats, etc, maybe letting her start with something like a small flock of chickens-get her some chicks-not so cuddly-and they are messy, too...

“I think bidding was for meat of the goat, not the goat. The goat passes to buyer via the slaughterhouse. Perhaps the intention is humane, to avoid amateur butchering.”

The buyer can request that the animal not be slaughtered.

“Regardless of who buys the animal, even if she buys it herself at the final sale, the animal is in fact slaughtered.”

The winner can request that the animal not be slaughtered.

Repo is a civil matter. There was no loan or contract in dispute in the goat matter. Think of you having someone auction your car but you drive off with it.

Is goat as tasty as lamb?

Everyone has personal tastes. I absolutely love lamb, even more than beef. Goat is good, but to me it’s not as good as lamb.

“I gotta side with the kid on this one.”

She could have withdrawn before the auction. Once a winner is declared, possession goes to the organizer.

I suspect young children falling in love with the goat they are raising happens all the time. I also suspect most times those running the program just let it be. I think someone saw this as a chance to mess with the republican candidate and set everything in motion... no one democrat or republican wants to get caught in the optics of this and if running for office they would try to make themselves look to be the good person by letting the kid keep the goat.

"One of the reasons they tell kids not to name food animals. Dogs, cats, horses, etc. = yes."
A number of years ago a friend gave me a goat with a deformed face that he didn't want to breed. I kept her in the back yards for years. She was very affectionate, would run over and nuzzle me to be petted. I finally had her put down when I found her unconscious and couldn't revive her. Her name was ironically Barbecue.

“Regardless of who buys the animal, even if she buys it herself at the final sale, the animal is in fact slaughtered. Those are the rules of the competition.”

I can post from multiple fair websites where this is not required.

They can be used for breeding or shown by buyer for advertising purchases.

I don’t have these fair rules but it is not a hard and fast 4-H rule.
