America has a Problem with Too Many Gun Laws

The United States has far too many gun laws. There are laws about where you buy a gun, who can buy a gun, who can possess a gun, who can carry a gun, what kind of gun can be bought, shot, loaned, carried, or given, and where a gun may be possessed, purchased, shot or traded, what kind of ammunition can be sold, possessed, made, or shot, and where it can be at what times.

There are laws about how big, small, old, or new, where a gun is or was made, and what it is made of.

These laws have proliferated across thousands of polities across the United States as politicians have used the laws to disarm out-of-favor minorities and political opponents and worked to create “do something!” laws that play to media-driven hysteria.

In the colonies and the early Republic, there were extremely few gun laws. The rare gun laws were almost never enforced, in part because there was little serious mechanism to enforce them. The electorate would not accept any significant attempt to disarm them. Some early laws required people to be armed.

If you wish to understand how few gun laws there were, read the majority and minority opinions in Bruen, the Second Amendment decision from the Supreme Court in 2022. From Bruen p. 4:

Respondents next direct the Court to the history of the Colonies and early Republic, but they identify only three restrictions on public carry from that time. While the Court doubts that just three colonial regulations could suffice to show a tradition of public-carry regulation, even looking at these laws on their own terms, the Court is not convinced that they regulated public carry akin to the New York law at issue.

America has way too many laws, way to many regulations of all kinds.

Particulary, we have way too many federal laws.

There are something like 30,000 actual gun laws on the books, and another 300,000 or so gun statutes

Apparently NONE OF THEM are “Sensible Gun laws” according to the left who keep screaming that we need “sensible gun laws now!”

The more you study this subject, after a while it becomes not about gun control itself, but government gone out of control.

How much does it cost to administer many of these laws in terms of both scarce taxpayer money as well as police man effort and hours? Do they make efficient and effective contributions to fighting the criminal and tragic (suicides, accidents, and even mass incidents) misuse of firearms?

When you look at the history of gun laws, they are almost never really about controlling crime.

They are about the fear the ruling class has of the population, and the desire to disarm common people.

Most gun lawa are a kneejerk reaction for political reasons. The Dems just need to convince criminals not to break laws.

Way too many laws. And every one is an infringement upon the rights recognized by the second amendment.

The only valid gun laws are those against using a gun to harm others other than in self-defense.

America has way too many laws, way to many regulations of all kinds.

Every year the Congress and legislatures meet, and they pass laws. Laws piled upon existing laws. They seldom repeal any laws. Most of the labyrinth of laws restrict liberty in some way.

The pro-abort crowd keeps saying women should have the same rights as guns. So apparently they think women should be covered up while in public and locked in a closet when not in use. Sounds downright Islamic to me.

I haven't heard the mantra in a while, but for a long time, proposed firearm legislation was always pushed with the qualifier, "common sense," e.g., "What kind of person would oppose common sense gun laws?"

Of course this was subtly, but very intentionally divisive - if you opposed it, you weren't using common sense - you were not a reasonable person. The ironic thing is, the more heavily a, "common sense," measure was pushed, the more ridiculous and detached from reality it proved to be.

We are at about 480 million privately owned firearms in the USA.

I expect we will reach 500 million by the end of 2023.

The only GUN LAWS I believe in are “AN EMPTY PISTOL IS JUST A HAMMER, AN EMPTY RIFLE IS JUST A CLUB”, always be armed, locked, loaded, and prepared.

Always be polite, always be professional, always be ready to kill everything with a pulse!
