Because "reasons".
Every now and then I check my phone permissions, sometimes I find that Google has location data AGAIN. I turn it off and it reappears eventually.
IIRC every time I get a forced update on my phone all the apps get location data again by default.
Normally 0 apps get my location data.
But, of course, the cell towers get my location continuously.

Here’s a novel idea; don’t want to be tracked? Don’t carry a cell phone. I don’t own one and I get along just fine as I have for decades!
With rare exceptions (e.g., when requesting an UBER) I NEVER share location data with any businesses with which I deal. We use Apple products and the DEFAULT location sharing with a business is “NEVER”. The businesses have to ASK you to share your location and I simply say NOPE. And, guess what, they still want your business and will work with you not knowing your location.
“that allows cops to browse through that location data as if they were Google Maps results. “
saw that used on “First 48” last night ... one big-time drug dealer hunted and assassinated another big-time drug dealer ...

I was waiting in line for my car’s emissions test and I got a notification from the Yellow Pages app: “Will your vehicle pass the Indiana emissions test? Make an appointment with an auto service professional today.”
My father owned a basic cell phone but he never turned it on.
When I asked him why he said he didn’t want to be bothered by phone calls. 😃
It’s a pain, but turn ‘Location’ settings to ‘off’, and set a default location value in all of your apps that ask for location. Turn location off while in your car, until you actually need a map. If you have a ‘smart’ car, its software will get a location from nearby cell towers.

In this day and age, when you leave home it’s silly not to carry a means of communicating in an emergency because it might make the difference between your’s or someone else’s survival. And if you CCW, you should carry one because if you shoot someone (or use your firearm in self-defense), it’s a best practice for you to be the one to report the incident to police (goes to establishing your position as the vic, not the perp).
I carry a $30 flip phone with a removable battery. When I leave the house I remove the battery and put both inside of a waterproof bag. So it takes me about half a minute to put it into operation but until I insert the battery it’s about a trackable as a Zippo lighter.
As far as my cellular provider knows, I haven’t left the house in years.
I assume that’s how they got the info for 2000 mules.
