Today, Alaska is set to release the results of its special election to fill a vacant House seat, with Democrat Mary Peltola locked in a close race with former governor Sarah Palin (R). The election was Aug. 16, the state’s first ranked-choice contest, and after a 15-day waiting period required by state law, the results will be announced.

If she wins, Peltola would be the first Alaska native elected to Congress. If Palin wins, it would revive the political career of a candidate who lost the vice presidency in 2008. The winner would serve the last four months of the term of Rep. Don Young (R), who died in March. Palin, Peltola and Nick Begich III (R) will be on the ballot in November in the contest to decide who will serve for two years.

This shouldn’t even be close. Between ranked choice and mail-in voting, I smell a rat.

There is no one Alaskans love more than Sarah Palin and most ballots that did not have Sarah ranked first, will have her ranked 2nd and that means she will win.

“There is no one Alaskans love more than Sarah Palin and most ballots that did not have Sarah ranked first, will have her ranked 2nd and that means she will win.”

I’m not so sure about that. It’ll come down to who Nick Begich’s voters chose for second place. And Nick Begich’s whole family are Democrats. And since Begich was the Republican Establishment’s preferred candidate, it’s likely that moderate republicans who voted for Begich would prefer the Democrat over the conservative Palin.

We’ll see.

But this is just to fill out Don Young’s term anyway, and the general electorate vote may be different than the primary electorate vote. So the Democrat may win the special election and then Palin might win a full term in November.

In 1922, elections could be completed and the votes tallied in a single day. In 2022, a half-month after the primary, the vote is still not tallied. Something is fundamentally wrong.

Apparently they had super computers in 1922 and in 2022 we have ballots mailed out aimlessly to non-voters and votes alike, even dead people get ballots now. I guess our K-12 education system is really showing progress as our graduates seem to be going backwards.

In Alaska, one only needs to be a small fraction native Alaskan to be considered as such. Thanks to Ted Stevens, this is a very privileged class, especially in government contracts.

That’s 21st-century progress for you. A 15-day ‘waiting’ period to announce election results. Waiting for what exactly?

Sarah Palin's kids all qualify since her Husband had Alaskan Native lineage.
