Seven more Republican leaders have announced their endorsement for Pennsylvania's Democratic candidate for governor Josh Shapiro, following photos of GOP state Sen. Doug Mastriano wearing a Confederate military uniform.
This comes one month after nine Republicans vowed to support the Democratic candidate and called Mastriano an "extremist" who threatens American democracy.
According to a statement released by the Shapiro campaign on Tuesday, the group includes Michael Chertoff, the former US Secretary of Homeland Security under President George W. Bush, and Mario Civera, a former state representative.
Shapiro, the state's attorney general said he was proud to receive the endorsement from these GOP leaders "who are putting our Commonwealth ahead of partisan politics in order to come together and move Pennsylvania forward."
In the press release, Chertoff, the former US Secretary of Homeland Security said while he's a long-standing Republican, he is "deeply troubled by Doug Mastriano's embrace of dangerous extremism."
"Josh Shapiro, on the other hand, is a staunch defender of our democratic institutions and will lead Pennsylvania with honor and integrity. I am proud to support his campaign for Governor," Chertoff said.

“See all you boneheads.”
Really moron? How many national monuments are in PA? Lets just look at Gettysburg; how many war re-enactments have been held over the decades? Are we to believe that everyone who participated and wore the not-blue uniform is some slavery-embracing hill-William?
The mindlessness beggars belief.
We’ll see who wins this race.
None of them are running for office, now are they. The fact that you cannot get that key difference says a lot!
Confederate uniform isn’t cool in a union state, but would be in a confederate state? whoa total shocker
What state was the Battle of Gettysburg in?
Wearing a Confederate soldier's uniform at a historical event is a non-issue but especially in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania may be geographically located north of the Mason-Dixon Line but since the Civil War, it's a Southern state.
Mastriano is trying to win in PA, not MS!

PA likes trannies like Admiral Levine, so what do you expect?
Yeah, it was stupid for, especially, someone with political ambitions.
But it was nearly a decade ago in a circumstance where army war college faculty members were invited to dress as historical figures: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/doug-mastriano-confederate-uniform-gop-pennsylvania-governor-nominee/.
God help us if we can now only study the war strategies of woke militaries.
The GOP pols “speaking out” were and are nothing other than controlled oppo anyway.
People here still speak of that as a time of great wonder when money flowed from the east into the Mountain State all due to the great Senate sorcerer Byrd of the White Sheet.
Their numbers are fewer every year, I used to ask them - ‘Name one thing Byrd got funded that still exists stands on its own meaning its self-funding’. They can’t! Lots of things are named after him here but once you get past saying the name, Thats it!
I was in the WVU’s President office for a meeting the day Byrd died. When that happened, they got a call that $30 million of earmarked funds were being reclaimed by their respective agencies and would be pulled out of WVU’s budget. I was there when they got the phone call. Prior to that they acted like Byrd was immortal.
True that! We’ve won races here before though, but we had way better candidates than Mastriano. I still support the guy over terrible Shapiro but this is frustrating! We need to win by 5 or more to offset the cheating.
Especially the ones with skulls on them...
At some point voters need to start looking themselves in the mirror.
It’ll be too late then and we will have undeserving people in office like Fetterman taking away more and more of our rights. I’m still not able to convince people on this site to support the PA candidates (mostly Oz). I assume you are in TX, it would be like not voting Abbot and letting Beto win (can you even imagine)!
They have already made using the atomic bombs on Japan as a crime against humanity.
Thnx!
Sounds like Fetterman is exactly what PA deserves.
Trump had money and national attention...neither of which Mastriano has the luxury of (well maybe he does now for the wrong reasons). My question is why didn’t Mastriano address this in the primary? Did he not think this would come up?
As long as the Repubs give in to this insanity and refuses to see anything but outrage over a reenactment of a very important historical event then they’re more doomed than I thought. MAGA Patriots get ‘em OUT of the Congress!!!!
