A U.S. coast guard cutter conducting patrols as part of an international mission to prevent illegal fishing was recently unable to get clearance for a scheduled port call in the Solomon Islands, according to reports, an incident that comes amid growing concerns of Chinese influence on the Pacific nation.
The cutter Oliver Henry was taking part in Operation Island Chief monitoring fishing activities in the Pacific, which came to a close on Friday, when it sought to make a scheduled stop on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, to refuel and re-provision, Coast Guard Lt. Kristin Kam told the Stars and Stripes newspaper.
There was no response from the Solomon Islands' government for diplomatic clearance for the vessel to land, however, so the Oliver Henry diverted to Papua New Guinea, Kam said.
She declined to specify when the incident occurred, and the Coast Guard did not immediately respond to emails or calls from The Associated Press for comment.
In a statement, however, the Coast Guard said the Oliver Henry had arrived in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on Tuesday “following a patrol in parts of the Coral Sea and the Solomon Islands.”
Britain's Royal Navy did not comment directly on reports that the HMS Spey, also taking part in Operation Island Chief, was also denied a port call in the Solomon Islands.

Solomon Islands is a constitutional monarchy, with the British monarch, represented by a governor-general, serving as the formal head of state. Still, the country, a member of the Commonwealth, is independent, and the governor-general is appointed on the advice of the unicameral National Parliament.
So why is one of our Coast Guard ships there?

Coast Guard isn't only about doing search and rescue and stopping people from partying on sailboats. They do a lot of international work on things like drug enforcement, ocean pollution and the like which are governed by international treaties. They also are very involved with foreign governments on the regulation of shipping to/from the USA. They are highly respected by most, if not all maritime nations of the world.
To everybody wondering why the Coast Guard is patrolling foreign seas, it is the same reason the U.S. Navy is.
After WWII, the USA decided to bolster its navy in order to keep the sea lanes safe for international trade — PAX Americana.
Does that still make sense in today’s world? I don’t know.
Soon all ships will be named for trannies whose only accomplishments was lasting the 4 years (was 6 years in the Coast Guard when I signed up) it took to have the tax payers cover their tranny surgeries.

I hate to think about what the Chinese are doing to the oceans. They don’t give a shit about anything. I’m sure their fishing fleets are just strip fishing entire segments of the worlds oceans. The Chinese are a cancer on humanity.
